Vacuum recommendation other than DYSON??

Vacuum recommendation other than DYSON??

I had a dyson on my registry but i took it off because I didn't want 6 people chipping in on it and then not get other things I really need like towels, sheets, etc. Anyone have a good vacuum that is NOT a dyson? It can be an upright or canister, just under $200. I am thrifty, even with other people's money!!!

I've heard very good things about Kenmore, but it's a Sears brand so you'd have to be registered there. Also, it could be the model we have but we are on our third in < 2 years (we have the green Kenmore one, I think it was $140?)

I was hesitant about the price but decided to register for the Dyson animal (the purple one). I shed huge amounts and we have hair dust bunnies on the carpet, plus 2 cats and really really want a good vaccuum. If it doesnt meet my high expectations we can just bring it back to BBB for cash and buy something else.

Maybe check out Amazon.com and consumer reports for some ideas?

I love my Dirt Devil En Vision

DH and I bought it when we got our apartment a year ago, it was the first 'house' thing we bought.
It's awesome. We have 3 cats and two rabbits so we have fur everywhere and this thing ***** it up with no problem. we use it to clean the rabbit cages and it has no trouble sucking up large pieces of litter or anything else.

it's a canister so it makes for easy emptying and you can see if there is a clog or anything in the hose b/c the dirt stops swirling around the canister.

it has a few hose attachments, and a 'power brush' attachment as well to help get fur or other hard to grab things.

did i mention that i love it. oh, and it was CHEAP.

Thanks girls. I have a shark now, a cheapie thing that is broken, but I do like that it's a canister - Kerri, like yours, you can see what's in it and all that. And it did work very well .. still does, but emptying it is a b i t c h because something broke around the canister and if you aren't careful when emptying it, everything gets all over the floor, completely negating all the vacuuming you just did. But it picks up REAL well, so I may stick with a shark. I saw one in BBB that also claims to never lose suction like the dyson ... not sure how that works. I do know that my shark's filter thing needs to be 'tapped' clean after vacuuming just one room, which is annoying but I guess means it's picking up a lot of crap.

My mom swears by her commercial Oreck. It's a bagged upright but we had to have it repaired and the repair guy was like - 'this is the best vacuum ever.'

Personally - I would stick with Oreck or Hoover, they've been around forever so they must be doing something right...

You may also want to look into Bissel, Oreck, and Hoover

My mom just got one of those. She loves it too. I really would like to register for one, though, so there is less for me to buy later, you know? I guess that is the point of registering But I will keep it in mind ...

On a side note, my mom's oreck came with a free iron. I saw it the other day and it's twice the size of my iron. Why in earth does someone need to make an iron that big???

I have had my Panasonic 4 over 10 years and I love it...it has a HEPA air filter and cleans great. No maintenance problems (other than when it ****** up a HUGE cat toy that I couldn't get out...)!! ALso, my FH has an Oreck and it's also great...lightweight (only about 8 lbs) and cleans great!!!

I like that it is quiet! And $299 isn't terrible. Thanks, I will consider. My sister has a canister and said she loves it.
