Re: vegas weddings...
Well, the truth is that fh may be going into the nypd academy in july. There are numerous benefits beyond our love for getting married quickly, i.e. health insurance, spouse benefits....
My mother is also waiting for a kidney transplant and I am being tested as her donor. I need insurance in order to do this.
We were very content with the idea of the JOP in ny but now I'm thinking I want more memories out of the day. We thought Vegas might be fun and at the end of the day we'd be married.
We also keep debating whether we want my mom to throw us a big wedding (which it will inevitabely be). I'm going to talk to mom about this today. I think we should go to vegas and have a ny wedding next july. initially i didn't want friends and fam to know b/c that may take away from our ny wedding.
suggestions...

Re: vegas weddings...
I know a couple of people who got married and then had a bigger wedding later on, and I think that it's perfectly acceptable to more and more people now--especially considering the cost of a wedding.
I've never been to a Vegas wedding, but have seen a few and considered it myself.
You can get great wedding packages at most of the hotels there that include photography, hair and make-up, the ceremony and even a small reception afterwards. You can invite a few close family members and it would be a vacation for all too! Check out the hotel websites and look into their wedding packages and deals--it'll show you pictures and pricing and what's included.
As for relatives not knowing, I don't know how hard or easy that may be to keep. I don't think they'll take away from your NY wedding though--especially considering the situation. They might even think it romantic and spontaneous!

Re: vegas weddings...
I was all for a Vegas Wedding at first. I didn't want to have to be involved in planning a NY wedding whatsoever. FH is the one who put his footdown on the issue and I'm glad he did. I'm having soooo much fun now that I'm done with school and everything.
Of course your life is totally different than mine and you have to do what suits you both and what will be the best in the long run. I agree that it is becoming more and more acceptable today. FBIL had like 4 wedding celebrations!!! I think that is pushing it a little much!!!
Good luck with everything!

Re: vegas weddings...
I did and it's been a secret for 2yrs. now on June 2nd We had enough with the comments of how since we had kids we didnt need a wedding so we left one weekend and came home Mr & Mrs. We will have our big wedding June 1st 2008. FM if you want details. DH wanted to go back every year and renew our vows because we just had a fantastic time. It was just the two of us and the only person who knew was my mom because she babysat and my brother and sister because my mom insisted we tell them. My mother in law did eventually find out thanks to a few nosey people but I will never regret getting married in VEGAS

Re: vegas weddings...
My coworker is getting married in Vegas this summer!
I actually considered it BEFORE I was engaged only because I love Vegas and I thought it might be fun. In the end, when we got engaged, we decided a NY wedding was best so that as many of our family and friends could be there to celebrate with us.
But definitely look into it. Like someone said, there are a lot of great packages at all the major hotels, and even in the surrounding areas by the lake etc.
The secret part is up to you. I TOTALLY understand why you'd want to keep it a secret - although it's becoming more and more acceptable, I still think there would be some people that would be like, ok if they're already married, why another wedding, etc. Not saying that that's right, but just realistically speaking. And I would NOT want anyone to dampen my big day.
Good luck!

2 Years! Wow!
That's great for you guys. I think it's cute how your DH wants to go back every year to renew your vows--that's really sweet.

Re: vegas weddings...
go online and research your optioins. What you are looking for exactly. there are larger places in the hotels that would cost quite a bit more, then say ' the little white chapel' .. where Brittany Spears did her quicky..LOL. Actually.. so did Kelly Ripa and her hubby. Some of the smaller places will give you a whole package including dress rental if needed... Just need to research it.
I personally would still go somewhere memorable and get dolled up.
Someone I know just got married at the little chapel on top of the Strat and she loved it. Very small but with a great view.
All I can recommend is you search the internet and read all your options for what fits your needs.
I do live here... so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Good luck!

Wow, you ladies have been SOOOO helpful. I actually just want to go w/ fh at the beginning of july. My mom is insisting that she come too. That's fine. So it will be the 3 of us. Also, we will still have the big wedding celebration here in ny next july. this is being done asap for insurance purposes. I can't wait.
