My sales lady at Wedding Salon said the veil covers the shoulders for the church, once you are pronounced husband and wife, then the veil is behind the shoulders for the rest of the day.

It's hard to make the call on if you should wear it near your face or not without seeing a pic of it.
When I was trying on veils, I tried one that was lace on the edges (a bit mantilla style) and I actually loved it.
(I tried that type of veil with a duchess satin mermaid gown)

I think if your wedding dress has clean simple lines and a sleek shape then a veil with design can go near your face. If your doing ballgown with beading, then DEFINITELY keep it away from the face so the ensemble doesn't overwhelm you or look too busy.

One woman I spoke to actually said it has more to do with the cut of the veil and less with the pattern or edges. Some fabric will lay better away from your face, and others will be more forward, so get someone to play with what you want. and it should work

i would definitely try some veil's on with your dress and maybe with the style you want your hair in. you never know how it will look. i'm having a dilemma about my veil so i have to wait until i figure out how i am doing my hair and put my dress on!
