Veils

Veils

How far ahead do girls usually get one? I have over a year until my wedding, but I think the person altering my dress said for the 2nd fitting in June I should have my veil and shoes.. it seems like too soon to get that stuff though, to me. My mom was saying shoes shouldn't sit in my closet for over a year. Thoughts? Advice? Also, where did girls go for these items?

TIA

Re: Veils

You're starting your fittings this year? I didn't start my fittings until April 2009 for my Aug. 2009 wedding -- and even that was a little on the early side.

I got my shoes in Feb. 2009 because I found a good sale.

I ordered my veil in May 2009.

Re: Veils

I'm getting married July 3rd and I just ordered my veil, it will be ready May 5th & still dont have my shoes. My suggestion to you is decide the heel height and just get a pair of shoes at that height for now & take your time picking your final shoes. As for veils, I dont you NEED a veil now but if your fittings are at a store cant you just wear one of the store samples?

I'm not getting married until 9/10/11 and I already picked out my dress and my veil. I bought them at the same store - Lillette's in Balwin - the woman in the store helped me find the veil that would look best with the gown. As for shoes, I'm 5'9 and FH is only 5'11 so I'm wearing ballet flats!! But I think you should have your shoes for the 2nd fitting because you don't want your gown to be too short or too long.

Re: Veils

Well, my situation is a bit different b/c I got my dress @ Filene's Running of the Brides.. and it had a few stains on it, so I wanted to get it cleaned.. and while its getting cleaned, we decided to get started on the alterations as well, b/c the dress fit just right.. the only things being altered are around the shoulder area and the length.. plus the straps.. but nothing to do with the actual dress size around my body.

I'd be careful about doing too many alterations now, but if you're doing anything that would have an effect on the length of the dress, you will need to have your shoes.

I dont have a dress or a veil yet, but will help you on on the 'where to' part of your question...
Ive been told to check out Tri County Flea Market...a place called Barrons

Re: Veils

I can't imagine how a veil would really IMPACT your fitting in anyway...the suggestion may have been so that you can see you complete look.

My first fitting is end of July for my end of Oct wedding and the woman as the salon said the two items I MUST bring with are my EXACT shoes (not just a heel height) and my day of lingerie...

I dunno why you are starting your fittings so early...I'm getting married July 18 and I haven't even started my fittings yet.

Re: Veils

Hmm.. I think my mom and I just figured that since the dress pretty much fits, the length and shoulder area will not make a difference as far as when its altered.

I purchased my veil and dress already.

Re: Veils

Please don't do your fittings now. You're just going to have to do more alterations down the line and this might mess up the dress. A lot can change in a year.... a lot can change in a MONTH.

I ordered my veil in January and just picked it up at the beginning of April. I started my fittings almost 2 mos. out from the wedding date. My final fitting is in 2 weeks.

ETA: Okay, so you're just altering the height. Do you have the exact shoes you are wearing on your wedding day? What if you decide in 6 months that you hate them? then you have to scramble to find shoes the EXACT same height or risk dealing with more alterations. And sure it fits you NOW, but what if you gain or lose weight and you need more alterations! It just seems like a waste of time and energy to me.

I did my dress in January and I did my veil about a month ago. I got that at Tri County. I started looking for shoes and I havent seen anything I love but I still some time.

Re: Veils

I definitely would NOT start your fittings now.....you are wayyyyyyy too early!! Especially don't touch the length of your dress without having shoes. I'm getting married in 6 months and won't start my fittings until 2 months before.

Re: Veils

Thanks.. I have heard about Tri County for veils.

Thanks to everyone for your advice.. I will get the shoes before my next fitting.

Like I had written, I'm doing the fittings now b/c I wanted to get the stains out of my dress... and the only alterations are height and shoulder area. Thanks for your replies though.
