Is there a way of finding out if a venue has filed for bankruptcy or has financial problems?

no, there really is no way of finding out... that's why everything that happened at the waterview was so sad- nobody had a clue that there were any money issues. But, in order to protect yourself in the event that ever happens to your venue, do not pay too much into the venue too far in advance. We only have 4 venue payments, all in the $1500-2000 range (last one is May 1) and then the rest of the balance is all paid a couple of weeks before the wedding.

you might also want to shop for wedding insurance. we purchased a plan for this exact reason through travelers. highly recommend.

I had no clue there was such a thing as wedding insurance!
It was only a few hundred dollars - worth it! especially in the aftermath of hurricane sandy / waterview club. I know there are a few other insurance options. You could probably google it and see what comes up.

It's great for piece of mind when you book your venue so far out, we booked 1 1/2 years out. Took out the insurance the next week.

We're getting wedding insurance as well since we're having a winter wedding and my biggest fear is a giant blizzard!

Thank you, I called the better business bureau and all they were able to do was give me ratings on the venues.. I had no idea about the wedding insurance.. What a great idea!!
