Vendor Payment Question, Help!!

If you make a payment by credit card (the vendor does advertise they accept them) are they allowed to charge you a fee if its over a certain amount?

ie: a fee of 5% of the amount your charging???

One of my vendors told me that and I think its ridiculous! Wondering if anyone else had this problem, and Ive made payments by credit card w/ the same vendor before and never had a problem, they said its a 'new policy'

5% is high-
most credit card companies charge about 2 or 3 %

American Express is the highest and it is only 4%

It is because the CC companies charge them...but if I am not mistaken, it is against the law for merchants to charge consumers a fee for paying by CC. Look into it - or pay by check if possible. People stink, don't they?!

i would definitely call your credit card company and see if that vendor is even allowed to charge you 5%.

Sounds like the vendor is trying to push the fee the cc companies charge him off onto you, and try to make a little profit while he's at it as well. 5% sounds high.

Try paying with the checks that the credit card companies give you....

lol yes they do!! I dont mind paying w/ a check but I just wanted to know if they are even allowed to charge me the fee for using my credit card in the first place.

Usually people either dont accept credit cards or if you pay with it, they'll charge the tax. But I've never heard of a fee for using it.

I'll call the credit card company to see what they say, thanks ladies! :)

IT'S AGAINST THE LAW B/C THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING THAT FEE (VENDORS) NOT YOU!

Also- if I have already made payments to this vendor, I would have a problem with them applying this 'new policy' to me. I was a customer before that policy went into effect - use it on the new customers, not me.

Yeah, this does sound strange. None of my vendors charged me a fee for a credit card. Somewhere I read it's good to use credit cards whenever possible so you can go through the credit card company if there is some dispute over the charges or services performed.

However, credit card or no, it does not sound valid to get charged a fee.

Thats a good point!! You shouldnt be faced with the policy change!

I understand why the vendor tries to pressure you into paying by cash or check for their own profit purposes BUT I have to wonder is this vendor reputable? I have found that some vendors prefer cash and then they will forgive the tax however if the vendor is charging you tax they shouldn't have an issue with you paying my credit card, it's part of their business expenses.
