Vendor Rant - Fuzzy Math

Hi Ladies,

I went to this wedding vendor whose name I don't want to say at the moment because the issue isn't resolved yet. I went there to rent charger plates and a card box. This was after they failed to send me the proposal via email after numerous calls and emails. So I decided to go to the place in person (mistake number one). I'm going to lay out what the invoice looks like and tell me if I'm wrong or just plain stupid:

Charger plates $165
Card Box $ 75
Refundable deposit on plates $50
Refundable deposit on box $100

SubTotal $390

Tax $ 20
Rental Deposit $150

Total Due $590

Total Paid $150
Balance Due $410

I don't understand why the deposit amount of $150 is there twice. I told the girl over and over I didn't understand it and she kept explaining it to me. I would understand while she was explaining and then I would think about it and get confused.

My big mistake was leaving the place without feeling comfortable about what I just signed for. I don't know why I did that. She probably thinks I'm stupid. I wanted to tell her I'm not mathematically challenged, I have an MBA in Finance, their math is just fuzzy, but I didn't want to be rude.

They haven't cashed my check yet and I called yesterday but they were all out at an event. I'm thinking about putting a stop payment on the check. This is the only vendor I am not really in love with. I think their attitude stinks and they are a bit snobby. Can someone please tell me what I'm not understanding.

i agree taht it makes no sense ...

also, if you're paying $165 for charger plates, then the $50 deposit should not be ADDITIONAL to that $165. It should be - you pay $50 now, and the other $115 is later. Same for the card box, obviously.

And yes, the deposit is there twice which is also wrong.

i think your total should be:
$165 for charger plates
$75 for card box
$20 for tax
-----
$260 total ($150 as a deposit, and $160 later)

if you have a bad feeling about working with them, then don't ... you don't need stress from BS.

That doesn't seem right to me.
My question is why would they only charge you $75 for the card box but you have a refundable deposit for the box for $100?

Also the total amount due should be $560 not $590

If they can't explain it in plain english what they are charging you for, I wouldn't deal with them. JMO.

If you are not happy then CANCEL that check and go elsewhere. I do not deal with people who do not make thing crystal clear for idiots. I am not an idiot but it want easy to read...so easy I cannot mistake what it says. If you are not in love cancel and tell them you were not comfortable with the deal. Ask to speak to the owner...they should understand how unclear and double charging it seemed.

Their math is way off. Cancel the check and select another vendor.

Ditto, cancel not only because the math is off but also because you feel uncomfortable with them - you don't want to have to worry even more as it gets closer to the wedding

Why is the refundable deposit for the card box more than what it actually cost to rent it? This seems really strange

A LOT of this math is 'fuzzy'. I think you should take your business elsewhere and save yourself a huge headache!
