Ok please tell me if I am over reacting. FH and I were debating whether to serve alcohol at our reception for 2 reasons. 1 my granfather is a southern baptist minister and does not like being around it and 2 the hotel we are having it as does not have a liquor license. Which meant we would have to supply the glasses and even serve ourselves. My family does not drink, so I asked FIL's what they thought because they are social drinkers. They said we should not worry about it. They were the ones who said we shouldn't and now FH said they are doing a hospitality suite at the hotel. So if anyone wants a drink during the reception they can go to their room. My wedding will only have about 60 guests. It's my day and she will have half the guests in her room. I am over reacting, or is she trying to hog my day. I mean we had nothing against serving alcohol, but sided against it on their word.

Re: Vent
That would bother me too, but it would also bother me as a guest if I traveled a long way and there wasn't any alcohol at the wedding. When someone is going through so much time and money to spend your day with you then I think the least that you can do is provide them with a free drink. Can you move the hospitality bar out to the main reception area instead?

Re: Vent
Well my FH is a big person on budget and after they said we shouldn't he took the money from the budget. We just bought a house and my dress ended up alot more than expected. Also since we were not doing that, we ended up getting the nicer flowers etc. So now we can't afford it.

Re: Vent
I agree with the above post...I would be upset if there was no alcohol at a wedding, regardless if I traveled far or not...as a guest, we are coming with a gift (hopefully generous!) and some people enjoy to have a few drinks....

Re: Vent
i could understand why you would be upset but imo i would also feel that it is weird if i didnt have the option of having a drink at a wedding if i wanted one b/c im not a big drinker at all but its a very social thing and people tend to like to have champagne, etc at weddings.
If youre on a budget and thats the problem maybe there is some sort of compromise you and FH can make?

I definitely don't think you are overreacting with the hospitality suite issue. That would make me annoyed as well. However, like the other girls mentioned, I would definitely not be pleased if I went to a dry wedding.
What about offering only wine and beer? You can do that really inexpensively and just have a table set up where people can help themselves. Or, what if your FIL's paid for that instead of a hospitality suite?

Well we just never thought it was a big deal. We had to cut all friends but 4 from the list because the church is so small. The guest list is basically all family. Nobody on my side drink at all. And the people on his side either don't drink or are like 80. We are doing a sit down dinner. No dance floor or dj. So we did not think it would make a difference

Re: Vent
Personally, as I guest I would be a bit disappointed if there was no alcohol and I don't really drink. My cousin did this and it caused a lot of issues with people--even those who do not drink at all.
Is there any way you can compromise with FH on this? Maybe you can move the hospitality suite to the main room...or even just serve wine and champagne and that's it. Since it's a small wedding, you can probably just serve that and it would be fine.

Just to understand a little better - here you're saying that most people don't drink on either side. But in your first post you mentioned that you're upset that half of your guests will be in the hospitality suite drinking. Did I misunderstand something? If they don't really drink, then there really shouldn't be an issue, no?

I think that wedding and alcohol go hand in hand. I wouldnt be all that happy if I went to a wedding and wasent offered a drink. Thats just me though, and I do happen to enjoy drinking!
