My FH's family requested that we use a cousin (not a close on) who is a DJ at our wedding. My budget for music is $3K. I planned for a DJ and a live Greek musician. For the extra Greek music, it is ~$800. That would leave me with about 2K for the DJ.
However, the DJ they wanted is $4K (at the 'family' discount - and the 'basic' package), and though they offered to pay, when my FH asked several times, they had an excuse. They had to pay taxes, for their daughter's car, etc. I had to pay the deposit ($1200), and I'm more than a little annoyed. I would've stuck to my budget -- now I'm spending 2K more! To me, that's alot.
How do you handle something like this? I've mentioned it to FH and tried not to make too big a deal of it, but I'm upset. Should I say nothing, and just hope they offer again? Grrrrrrrrrrrrr...................

Re: Vent about FMIL and FFIL
No, FH and I went and signed. I didn't want to offend his family and I wanted them to feel part of the decision making. Thing is. FH is a student and wants to feel independent from his parents. He never asks them for anything, especially money. It's a touchy subject for him. So, my family and I are financing everything, despite the fact that his father makes more than both my parents and myself combined.
As with a lot of things with this wedding planning, I think I should have thought about it before choosing. Every vendor makes you feel like you have to sign RIGHT NOW....

That's a lot of money for a DJ. Have FH explain to his parents that is is way over your budget, and ask them to pitch in for the extra cost since you are doing a favor for them. Be firm.

That's a ton of money for a dj. I'd find a way to back out of it and get your money back. Seriously put your foot down. $4k for a 'basic' package is nuts. $4k would get you lights, smoke, giveaways and more. GL!

wow thats a lot for a DJ and for a basic Package! Honestly I would tell FH he has to talk to them, even though he doesnt want to he almost has to or your out money you could use on something else.

Wow, that IS a lot for a DJ. Do you want to have this particular DJ, or are you only doing it to please the FIL's? Can't you just say (or have FH say, its probably more his place) 'sorry, but we've already got the music taken care of' ?

Re: Vent about FMIL and FFIL
It is a lot for a DJ, but to be fair, it is a DJ with a live percussionist and a saxophonist - so I guess it is kind of a mix. The package also included some lighting changes in the background.
FFIL really really liked him in previous weddings and was adamant that we have him. I was happy just to see him express some interest, so I didn't give it too much thought, especially since he mentioned also that he'd cover it. Maybe he will -- I just didn't think FH would need to bring it up with his mother so many times. At my insistence, he's mentioned it to them at least 2x, and each time there was some sort of excuse... :(

I spent a little over 1k for my DJ and it was NOT the basic package...4k is ALOT for a DJ. I dont know what to tell you-i would tell FH your thoughts and have him talk to his parents.

I would see if they could give you a break on the price. Try talking to the DJ and see what he says...I would just say that it seems like a lot of money that we are spending and we really dont have that much in the budget...GL

Re: Vent about FMIL and FFIL
I think 4K for a basic package at a 'family discount' is an insane amount of money for a DJ even if it includes musicians...
My DJ offers 5 hours of music, a percussionist, zap shots, live video feed on 2 plasmas, photo montage, and club lighting for only 3K. And I thought THAT was a lot. I would see if you could back out of your contract with them and if they are family, see if they would give you your deposit back.

agreed--
i am greek as well and i know first hand how annoying how parents could be but if it isnt too late dont use the guy/cousin they wanted to use-- they will get over it-- i would just be honest and say that you couldnt afford it-- they will not be to uptight about it-- and if they are-- then they will offer the $ if not-- choose who you want at the price you want as well-- hth--- greek inlaws seem worse than they really are-- they'll get over it--
