I went on a 2nd interview today at a top North Shore school district for a guidance counselor leave position (about 2.5 months) for this spring. I was feeling pretty good since this was a 2nd (and final) interview. While I'm waiting for the interview there's an older guy there schmoozing with everyone and hugging and kissing and it's obvious he used to work there. So - he interviews!!! And I find out afterwards that he is the retired counselor from the middle school!! Why would you do this? If you still want to work - why did you retire?? It really pisses me off because I wanted to say - why would you take this opportunity away from someone who has been interviewing and trying to get into the field for 2 years? Why would you take this chance away from new counselors who really need this?? I am so sick of being manipulated by school districts. Thanks for listening.

Re: Vent About Jobs/Education Field
That is the WORST part about teaching... the politics!!! If this guy missed working there... he could at least take a position subbing instead of a leave replacement!! I'm sorry about your experience... but please don't give up... working in this field is the greatest thing that ever happened to me (besides the FI )

Michal you don't want the answer to this but to make MAJOR money. This happened in my district too (and they don't have to train him). He will get his pension PLUS a HIGH Sub rate pay on top of it. Totally sucks I know. We have a teacher out right now- had MAJOR surgery and they hired a retired math teacher to replace her. When I leave they will be dividing up my classes like the last piece of bread instead of hiring someone (I feel awful for my students)
I'm sorry but it's not over until you hear that he definitely got it.

That totally stinks. I feel the same way about school interviewing, most of the time they know who they are going to hire and interview as a formality. I hate it, that is why I stopped sending my resumes to schools.

Re: Vent About Jobs/Education Field
I have seen school districts bite a lot of very highly qualified teachers in their arses. It is SO discouraging and I have been there too. All I have to say is that it must not have been the right situation for you and that something better will come along. Who wants to work for a school that will do that? I agree that once you retire, take a sub position on a day to day basis. If you missed it so much- oh well! Should have stayed in! I'm sorry you had to go through this!

Believe me I totally know how you feel. I am sick of all these politics. I totally agree how ridiculous it was for this guy to retire and still want to work and take a job from someone who really needs it. Here's a bunch of hugs your way. You deserve a break!!

I am so sorry you are going through this! Iknow how much you want a position in your field. K-12 is so political! I have a few friends who gave up on teaching jobs because they never were treated fairly, the jobs seemed to go to someone's niece or someone's lawyer's son, etc.
