some background: I originally wanted a medium sized bridal party (6ish). When FH and I sat down to choose our bridal party (something we did MONTHS before we actually got engaged) we realized it was going to be more like 8 or 9 each. i didn't love the idea, but i love the people i picked so i was ok. We ended up asking 9 people each and we did it back in October when we got engaged.
FH had talked to his parents about whether he needed to ask his cousin. They said he should consider it but the ball was in his court. FH decided against asking his cousin.
We found out this weekend that over thanksgiving FH's father told FH's uncle (cousin's father) that he was going to be a groomsman. . FH's cousin now thinks he's going to be asked!!!
I'm very upset bc i don't want an uneven bridal party (i'm basically OCD) and i can't ask a 10th girl bc it's obvious she was the last one picked.
I REALLY want FH to ask his cousin to be a reader instead. Is that a HUGE demotion? Opinions? Sympathy ?

sympathy: advice: YES! tell him that he will be a reader and that you just don't have enough readers if he's in the bp!

Eeek! What an aweful position you've been put in. Could you tell fh's cousin the ffil mispoke and he's a reader?

Wow - don't you love how some people totally take it upon themselves to make decisions about your wedding???
I would def ask him to be a reader. And just chalk it up to 'oh, I'm so sorry, FILs were mistaken.'

I would have FFIL mention to his uncle that it was a mistake. He started it so he should say something. And def. ask him to be a reader.

Yikes! I cant believe that someone else would take it upon themselves to do that!
If he does not want to be a reader, then maybe you can have him be an usher and help people find their seats before the wedding starts and then have two guys and one girl walk down together.
It is your day though and you already planned this in advance, but he is now a family member and he really was not at fault. On the plus side its great that he is excited to be in the wedding party and I'm sure he would be happy just to be part of the day. Good luck!

I agree with girls. Ask him to be a reader, and if he says he thought he was going to be GM, just say it was a misunderstanding. Good luck!!
