So, last year- FH's cousin got engaged. So, naturally there was a bridal shower. Me and FMIL and FSIL all went to the shower. It was potluck. I never heard of anyone having a potluck shower. So, fine- FMIL made sausages and peppers and thought nothing of it. So, besides the fact that FH's cousin and his new wife had the worst wedding we have ever been to. I won't mention where the wedding was because my a$$ would be kicked... It just seems like these people are so fricken cheap. I am saying this because I went to FH's house two days ago and FMIL goes 'Look at this!' and throws the invitation at me- it is a baby shower for FH's cousin and his wife- it is potluck AGAIN!!!!!!! And the tackiest part of the invitation reads 'There will be a 50/50 raffle for the baby's college fund.' Who the f*ck does that? We are spending enough on a gift, bringing food and now we have to shell out for a raffle? Has anyone heard of this before? Oh, the party is being held at the wife's Mom's house. I am sorry- it's okay to have a shower at a house but don't be tacky and ask people to bring food and contribute to a raffle!!!!! The christening in my opinion is when you give a lot of money for the baby's life savings. Ugh. I am so not looking forward to this shower. It's going to blow big time!

Hmmmm very interesting...im a pot luck fan but I dont think for a shower either!
As for the raffle, I actually think thats an adorable idea! I definitely wouldnt mind putting in a few bucks for that in addition to a gift. I can understand your point though!
Different strokes for different folks I suppose!

I don't mind the raffle either - but it seems more appropriate to do if the person throwing the shower was actually investing some money into the shower itself - not going el cheapo!

I personally think it's stupid to do this- the Baby will have a Christening and traditionally, bonds and cash are given as gifts. These people seem like they are trying to stash the most cash without having to shell anything out.

definitely agree that it is a bit weird since they aren't paying for much...i just think its a fun and different way to start a college fund...I think that I wouldnt do it for my kids, but i wouldnt mind doing it for someone else...it does however, remind me of a high school basketball game lol

Re: VENT-NWR Kind of LONG.
Here is my opinion.
1. I didn't even know what a 'pot luck' party was until I just read it on here and I have to agree with Espo22 on this I AM NOT cooking something for someone ELSE to have a party.
2. The only people that have to worry about our childs college fund is my FH & I. So I think it is SUPER D- DUPER tacky to ask for raffle money ----esp at a HOUSE party-
3. As far as saying giving the $$$, bonds, etc. is only for a christening...what if your child isn't being baptized? or the family isn't Christian? Then I think you should give a nicer gift at the shower.
But NOT a gift, raffle $$$, AND food. I'd rather stay home.

hmmm...nothing's nicer than an obligatory invite to a money-making party.
tacky is an understatement.

That is the most tacky and selfish thing I've ever heard of. They're just capitalizing on the generosity of others.

Alright Ladies. Today is the day of the tacky potluck shower. FH's Mom is making sausages and peppers to bring.... This is going to be so bad. I'll update when I come back!
