VENT...I need a new JOB!!!!- kinda long

Ok so about 2 years ago when I was a junior in college my uncle got me a job working as a student assistant in his office in NYC. It was great I was making a really great pay compared to my other friends. I liked the job it was simple but yet fun and I loved hte people I worked with. I worked in the city office for a year but then my senior year of college I moved home to LI and asked to be transferred to the Melville office. They accomodated me thankfully.

Well I have been in this office for a year now. So 2 years with my uncles business. Now he doesn't own the business it is a state insurance fund job. I am sort of like an administrative assistant but didnt take the state test since I was still in school but was doing alot more than a normal student assistant. Well in Feb they changed me from a student assistant to a temp (I didnt care I was getting paid a $1.50 more and getting vacation time).

Well yesterday my boss calls me into his office- and tells me they are switching me back to a student assistant and am going to go back to my original pay. Now I am graduated with a BA so I told him I am not loosing my vacation time (especially since I am taking a vacation starting tomorrow!!) and I Am not willing to lose pay so I am going to look for another job!

I think he was suprised!! But I now have a college degree in Psych and am starting my Masters for education this fall so I need a job with benefits and paid time off and for the money I deserve

AM I BEING SELFISH AND CRAZY???

and if anyone has any job opening in education or administration stuff let me know!!!! OR AT HOFSTRA SINCE I AM ATTENDING MY MASTERS THERE!! haha

you have EVERY right to be selfish in that sense and think about yourself - you go with your bad self & look for another job!!!!!

yeah the thing is it is hard to get a job with just a BA in pysch..i know i cant be a psychologist or work under on but i am going to get my masters for education anyway so i would love to work ina school but i know it is hard to when you dont have a teaching certificate== is that true for teacher assistants as well??

but also the thing is my boss told me it is because of ethical reasons they keep switching me because my uncle and myself have the same last name and that he knows i work hard and thats why he wants to keep me. but i know i need another job with benefits and such!!

however, it might make sense to take the test if the job is good. i think legally once they switch you over from student you have to take the test.

That is a rotten thing to do and you have every right to fight for your position and pay and benefits.

I think you are totally justified in your decision. Is there any way to talk to him about switching your title but keeping your benefits? It shouldn't be your problem that the company is screwing up.

Have you thought about putting your name on a sub list at your school district? You can make a ton of money that way. You should continue to be insured by your parents since you're technically still in school (my sister is and she just graduation as well but is going to Hofstra for her masters in the fall).

well it is kind of weird. my uncle works right under the CEO of the company. he helped me get the job just as an intern position for the summer about 2 yrs ago. But the Director of Administration liked me and knew I went ot school in the city so offered me the oppurtunity to stay if I wanted to contiune working throughout school. I worked in the city office making student assistant pay (which is still a good amount of $). Then once last summer came around I asked to be transferred to Melville office. I am here now. They said all student assistant positions were terminated so since I did not take a civil service exam I can be transferred to the temp agency and work under them but in my normal position. So I did that. Now I am getting paid more and getting 2 weeks vacation a year. I liked it but knew within the next couple of months I will be looking for a new job iwth benefits (health). But my boss told me yesterday that the insurance company I work with doesn't like since I hvae the same last name as my uncle that I was switched around so much. And how it could look suspisous like my uncle helped me get more money and vacation time and stuff by switching me to the temp agency. SO without even asking me they are switching me back to a student assistant...since technically I am still in school (getting my masters)

BUT THEY NEVER ASKED ME IF I WANTED TO GET LESS MONEY! So I told my boss no hard feelings but I will be looking for a new job!

that is where I am going for my Masters as well. I am trying to take a summer course however. But that is a good idea to become a sub. However I only have a BA in psych and not teaching as of yet- that is why I need my Masters in Inital Ceritifcation of Early Childhood/Special Education. SO can I still sub??
