Yesterday we had to get up at 7:30 AM, pick up my brother in New Hyde Park, drive to Patchogue (the furthest east you can get in Patchogue) for brunch which was scheduled at 10:30 so if you ask me that's breakfast. It ran late. That was to see my father.
Then we drove into Queens to have a cup of tea with my Mother and her husband and then when to fiance's parents house for dinner. It was rush rush rush everywhere.
Everyone wants to see us every holiday. There is no way I can keep everyone happy and not run myself and my fiance ragged. Although god bless him he's willing to try.
I hate splitting up holidays and from now on I won'd do it and it's going to make people mad but in a year or so when we start having kids I am not schlepping them to 2 or 3 different houses each holiday, nor am I hosting EVERYTHING. So from now on it's 1 place for the holiday and I'll have to celebrate it with whomever I don't see that year another year.
I'd rather at this point move out of state and not travel home for any holidays.
The best part of it ...I'm not Catholic anymore and don't even celebrate Easter!!!!!

Re: Venting about Holidays
Sorry you have to go through this. Hopefully your family will be understanding about splitting the holidays next year. I think you are making the right decision.

Re: Venting about Holidays
i know how you feel.
My dad got snotty with me this last christmas because i wanted to make a dinner at home instead of spend it with him and my stepmoms clan . after much grief we caved and made dinner another night. But thats very selfish of him. What if i lived out of state? whats the big deal if i don't see him for one xmas?? he doesn't seem to care that i have my own life and it doesn't revolve around her family... like his does. He couldn't spend ONE holiday away from her family... but he could live with not seeing me....
sorry, i have issues with that side of family. could you tell?

Re: Venting about Holidays
We used to do this, but now we just stay put. We just decided to flip flop the holidays. It's too hard running all over the place. You can't make everybody happy.

Re: Venting about Holidays
I am having these same issues. My parents are recently divorced and we are constantly trying to split the holidays between the two of them and FH's family. This Easter we decided to put it in writing. We actually made a calander for the next three years showing where we will be for each holiday! That way we can alternate and not have to see everyone on one day. We thought it was well accepted until my FMIL made a comment to me the other night about night liking our 'schedule', saying she will miss my FH no matter what. I understand that it is not her fault that my parents are divorced and she would rather see us 1/2 of the time instead of 1/3 of the time but you know what....tough!!! We really don't know what else to do (other than go on vacation for every holiday). Plus I agree - once we have kids we are definitely not shlepping all over the place in one days time. It'll be nice when I can host a holiday or two in a home of my own but even then my parents won't celebrate together. This is life I guess. I think the biggest thing is to just make a decision & stick to it. You can't feel guilty & try to make everyone happy.
