Venting...Not wedding related so please excuse me.

Venting...Not wedding related so please excuse me.

I work for one of the companies that is on an extremely heightened security alert because of threats on the company by terrorists. It's very scary to see one of your company's buildings on the cover of a newspaper as a target.

There are about 10 cop cars in the front of the building and so many extra security guards, they are not even letting anyone in the building without showing their id first. Usually, they let you inside the front doors and then have you show your id.

I am so uncomfortable being here today. I know this may sound chicken **** of me but I want to go home. I am just going to find it very difficult to sit here plugging away at this damn computer without worrying that something is going to happen. And the fact that I am all the way up on the 25th floor isn't helping my nervousness either.

A massive police presence, in my opinion, just makes people feel more nervous. Ugh, I wish I could just take a vacation.

Excuse me for my vent.

I would feel the same way if I were in your position. In fact, I don't think I would even go to work!!!

All I can say is that sucks, do NOT feel like chicken poop because you're scared - anyone would in your position! Is your work dealing with it at all or is it just 'business as usual'? I've learned to despise that term. Anyway, hang in there.

It's understandable, but as a NYer, you must surely know that not only your building is a target. The whole city is a target. Please don't let those a$$holes get what they want... our fear. Live your life day-by-day, keeping your daily routine, and leave the rest in God's hands.

oh thanks ladies. I feel a lot better now. My boss diudn't come in because she 'HAS A TOOTHACHE'. Yeah, right. LOL!

A coworker of mine was explaining how she went out of her way to avoud the east side of midtown this morning. Then we were laughing about the fact that there was a tiger running around near my neighborhood on Saturday.

So I feel better. Trying not to think about it. I know that I shouldn't be afraid or let the terrorists get the better of me, but my thinking is, what is the good of all that if you're dead. I love life and I want to live to a ripe old age and not get murdered by some crazy guy with a bomb strapped to his chest. Like I said, I'm a chicken.

I'm in the same position as you are. I work in the Morgan Stanley building in Times Square and I am so uncomfortable here.

I'm chicken, too... however, I'm chicken in dying in general. ANYTHING can happen at any moment. I could be walking down the street, and BAM! get hit by a cab. Or, I could be coming home, and be caught by wildfire gunshots and be an innocent bystander. Or, I could be out at the beach, and get bitten by a shark, and bleed to death... Ok, got a little dramatic, but you never know where & when your life-line ends. I just refuse to let them (terrorists) win.

See, none of that stuff scares me. I am not nervous when I am walking down the street or on the train. I am just afraid when I am siting 25 stories up with no pace to go.

I guess what I am truly afraid of is being like those poor people in the upper floors of the WTC on 9/11, standing there on a window ledge with only 2 choices, burn to death or jump to your death. I don't want to have to make that kind of decision.

Being scared is okay. You are not a chicken. You still showed up at work and are doing your job. I would be proud if I were you.

I think what your feeling is totally understandable and anyone in your position would feel that way. I even feel that way a little...I work for a big bank...tall building, although not one mentioned in the threat. It is completely understandable! Just look at the police pres this way, you are safer this way. Let it be a comfort to you. It's hard, these times really do stink! Just the fact that there are maniacs like that around scares me (and disgusts me). But you are doing the right thing by going to work...I am proud of you too. Just know that you are not chicken poop...you are a human being...it's completely natural and understandable! Here are a couple of hugs to get you through... Hang in there!

OMG!!! I work for one of the building mentioned too!!! I work on the 45th floor!!! I'm so scared it's not even funny. I was thinking about not coming to work but I figured what would I do for tomorrow the day after that and so on. It seems it'll be like this for the whole month of Aug. I really don't feel safe but I know I can't take off the whole month, I'm sure they'll fire me. Any HR people working here?? I don't want to work up so high, do you think they'll fire me if I tell them I want to work downstairs on a lower floor?

SpringBride05,

If you can get your doctor to write a letter explaining your anxiety about working on upper floors, it is possible that HR may consider changing your location. Possible. You should speak to them about it.
