Hello! My FI and I just started the planning process, and are struggling with venue. We're hoping for something a little more offbeat...more modern than the traditional catering hall. We originally were very interested in Liberty House in Jersey City, but discovered it's just a bit out of our budget. We're looking at having just under 200, and hoping to keep the per person cost to around $150 before service fees and tax. Unfortunately due to our schedules (resident and grad student), Saturday night is our only option. We're thinking September or October, but would consider as early as April 2013. Any and all suggestions welcome! Thank in advance!

If you're looking for a unique place take a look at the Metropolitan in Long Island City. Not sure about price tho, sorry.

check out The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers. It has a very modern and urban feel and if you opt for late march you can get a pretty good price for Sat night

If you want to do something outside of your traditional reception hall, there are so many spaces in NYC that are more industrial. The only downside is that if you just rent an event space, all of the rentals and catering (and almost certainly an event coordinator) might add up faster than intended, but it also means you have complete control over the look and feel of everything.
I would take a look at this list and visit a couple of places. Saturday nights are expensive, but I think you'll be able to do it in your budget:

This! Can't think of price either, but loved it so much - the owner is awesome and works with you to decorate the space anyway you want with a whole storage of furniture. I fought so hard for it but we only ended up where we are bc of so many elderly family members who couldn't do all the stairs

The Edison Ballroom near Times Square is really modern and cool. It's an old 1930's supper club that was recently restored and the chef won an episode of 'Chopped'. They gave us a great deal for a summer wedding (summer is off-season for many places in NYC, unless they're on the water). It wasn't really what I was looking for, but it's a really cool space. Also look at the Hudson Theater(an old Broadway Theater that is now an event space) and maybe The Water's Edge in LIC, or the Liberty Warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

I am not 100% sure but I think Bridgeview Yacht club has a separate space on their property that has a more loft / modern feel to it. I think their is a review from a a bride who got married there.
