so i bought a whole bunch of fruit and vegetables over the weekend... and today i brought to work a mango. i have never eaten a mango before... and i have NO IDEA how to eat it. can i eat the skin? do i cut it? does it have a pit???? ughhhhh...

please help!!

i am laughin cuz when i was in school i told my mom i really wanted a mango. so she bought one. neither of us knew what to do with it. so it wound up sitting in the fridge until it started rotting. then we through it out.

Okay very simple....

A mango has a very long and slim pit in the middle.
Don't eat the skin.

You see the pic I posted below. That is how you would lay the mango to cut it. But you cut it horizontally. If you have that stub that you see in the pic on the right had side, you can use that as a guide. Your horizontal cut should be right above that stub. That stub is lined up with the pit.

My suggestion after you make the initial cut. Is to eat the fruity part (which is very fibery sp.?) on the part you cut off. Eat the fruit off the skin. You can continue to cut, but I thin it gets a bit messy and hard to hold onto, so you can be a little animalistic and just dig in. If the mango is juicy be prepared for the juice to get all over you.

If the fruit part should be really soft to eat like eating through a ripe peach, then you know the mango is ripe and it should be sweet. Otherwise, if it is not sweet, you probably have eaten it too green. Mangos when ripe are bright red and orange.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

P.S. beware of the pit, it is big and tough, so don't try to bite into it.

Actually, if you get a mango that isn't ripe, just throw it into a paper bag and leave it in a cupboard for a day or two. That should ripen that bad boy up. Also, if you squeeze the mango and it isn't a bit soft it probably isn't ready to eat.

The same goes for avocados for all you guacamole fans out there. If you squeeze an avocado and it is hard as a rock, it most likely is not ready to eat. Do the same as the mango, put in a paper bag until it gets ripe.

Yeah not ready yet. Wait until it is really orange/red. But make sure you leave it out of the fridge. Leaving it in the fridge won't let it ripen.

absolutely. you can say what ever and i would take no offense. i have very tough skin. i dont believe in getting offended, because the second you let someone know that they have offended you... they suddenly have the power. they know in their head that with words, they can alter your mood and attitude.

Yup they are like little pearls. No you do not eat the outside. It took me like forever just to get it cut and the fruit out. I dont know but its really yummy. But sometimes ill just settle on the juice

John - I would like a full mango critique if you will?

this spice taste you speak of, please elaborate

would you say it was worth the hassle of slicing and dicing??
