Re: Very interesting article about living on Long Island
I just heard that on the news this morning ... its hard to figure out WHERE to live!
We're living in Westchester right now , though FH's family is on LI.. and we probably cannot afford a house in EITHER LI OR WESTCHESTER!
But we dont want to move too far from our families, either

I'm one of the few who actually moved to LI.
I kinda wish I hadn't. Except FH is here.

Re: Very interesting article about living on Long Island
thanks for posting that! yet we all continue to stay and live in our misery haha.... you hate it when you're here, but love it when your away from it. LOL how disfunctional-why would anyone live here
FH & I always say we will never leave becuase of what close family ties we have, but i don't know what's going to happen. i, personally refuse to spend half a million dollars on a piece of garbage house that needs another $100,000 worth of work haha

Re: Very interesting article about living on Long Island
great article!
this is very interesting fact from the article...
The report also said that Long Island, which has a population of 2.8 million people, is one of the most racially segregated suburban areas in the country.
Re: Very interesting article about living on Long Island
I thought that was interesting...sad...but true as well Lisa...

Where are the younger people moving too?
I feel that if one wants to work in NYC and live in suburbs, you're stuck either in NJ, NY burbs or LI.
And good areas of NJ aren't that much cheaper!!!

We are probably among those who will leave. I personally hate LI, but I love it for its convenience

Re: Very interesting article about living on Long Island
This article is not surprising on any level. I would move out of the tri-state area in a heartbeat if I could get DH on board.
(He wants to qualify for full pension benefits before considering a big move)

Re: Very interesting article about living on Long Island
Hopefully, we'll be off to PA...the Lehigh Valley area. Currently, we're living in Brooklyn...and one of the areas we considered moving to was LI (lots of our family and friends are here)...but it's just too expensive, and way too crowded for my tastes anyhow.
Besides, my main family (mother, sisters, nieces and nephews) lives in PA and from the research we've been doing, we can get MUCH more house and land out there for our money. The only thing that stinks is that if DH wants to stay working on Wall St., it's a 2 hour commute to the city.

I don't think I would be able to deal with that, especially if the hours are long as is

Alina...and once, my sister who commutes from there to Midtown, it took her 4 1/2 hours!!!!!!!! There was MAJOR traffic due to rain...
I don't know how we'd deal with this...our only hope is that we've been hearing rumors about train service proposed to start in 9/04...and would take 45 mins. We are soooooo hoping that this is TRUE!!!

Re: Very interesting article about living on Long Island
45 min train service, you mean like at Acela speeds or NJ transit speeds?
I commuted from Penn station to Morristown area, and that was an hour on a train, so how could something further be 45 mins?
It takes 25 mins just to get to Newark!!!

Don't know...it's just something we heard. I'm assuming that it would be at Acela speeds or something along those lines.
Even if it were a little longer...it would still be great to get train service from the Lehigh Valley area.

It's disgusting how many people are moving to LI. They should just allow the people who grew up here allowed to settle The rate we're going, Eastern Suoffolk is gonna look like queens!

I just don't know how everyone does it. I have a really good job...and there is no way we can afford 500K for a house...there's just no way. We are living in NJ now...I bought a condo last year...but it wasn't cheap either! Ugh!

Re: Very interesting article about living on Long Island
We can't wait to move back to LI! We're currently living in the Silicon Valley where houses are min $500,000 for a crappy house that was built in the 60's and property that is measured by the footage. We can't wait to move somewhere where we'll have some land. We don't want much, but at least enough where you can't shake hands with your neighbor from each others bathroom windows. It is going to be tough to save money though and it will be expensive, even if it is better than here.
