Very paranoid!!!

Very paranoid!!!

So, last Friday I almost had a little accident with my oven. I was warming up some bread while waiting for FH and started to smell something funky...open up my oven and I see a small flame of FIRE!!!

Luckily, I was able to put out the flame by blowing on it. So FH comes and I'm freaked out and about to call 911 so they can take the oven out of my apt...(I was afraid it was gonna blow up...lol..it's funny now.) FH was like, there's no fire, don't call 911. So, I call maintenance and they come and tell me there was grease in the oven.

Next day, me and FH go get easy off (or on) and then I bought myself a fire extinguisher and this other spray called tundra (just in case I have technical difficulties w/ the fire extinhuisher)

Problem--> ever since my little incident, I constantly check the oven as I'm baking and open the oven several times. Everytime I open the oven I have my fire extinguisher in my hand and I cannot seem to let go of it.

Recently, I now sleep with my fire extinguisher (lol...not sleep, I have it next to my bed), because I fear there's gonna be a fire.
FH tells me not to worry and that if there should be a fire I should run and not try to fight the fire.
I wanna try to tame it myself if I could though!!

So, how the hell do I stop being paranoid???!!
It is kinda funny, but I have such a wild mind. Everytime the oven makes a noise I walk over to it with my fire extinguisher.

Any oven experts here?? lol

It's not going to burst into flames suddenly. That doesn't just happen. As long as your oven is off at night, you don't have to worry about that.

If you're really still concerned even after you used the grease remover, I suggest calling the super again and having them come and check it again. Do you have apartment insurance? If you don't, I highly recommend it, just in general.

I was making s'mores brownies back in October and put the brownies back in the broiler in the oven and the marshmallows totally caught on fire... I had them up waaaaaaay too close to the top of the oven!!! I just pulled it out and blew them out -- and these were not small flames!!! LOL. But it was fine... I actually even salvaged the brownies. Crazy.

I'm so glad to hear you got a fire extinguisher. That is a VERY important part of every home! Remember never to pour water on a grease fire.

That being said... try to remember that when the oven is off, it doesn't just burst into flames. It would need a significant heating element to cause a fire. If you haven't changed your smoke detectors since last year's fall back time change, maybe change them now just for peace of mind. You can also get a carbon monoxide detector for your house if you want.

Try not to worry too much! It's so easy to become paranoid. Just remember that worrying is a misuse of imagination.

Feel better!!

Re: Very paranoid!!!

Thanks Ladies. I honestly have to say Thank-God. I'm so careless and actually have taken a quick shower when I was baking something in the oven. Everyone's told me to always stand by the oven if I'm cooking, but, I've always disregarded it for the most part. But, this has definitely made me more aware to not be so STUPID!!!
