Very Upset and Confused (long)

I am writing this because I need to get it off my chest. Although I would like your advice and insight, I'm afraid of the responses. I'm obviously hiding my identity because I'm embarrassed.
I feel like my marriage is a sham...as of last night. I thought that we had the best relationship and were on the same page, but that all came crashing down on me last night at home. Here's the story.
I think I may be PG. I am really excited and wanted to let my husband know that I should know soon. I told him and his whole demeanor changed to withdrawn. I asked him what was wrong and he said 'well, you just told me I could be a father...what did you expect my response to be?' I said 'we talked about my going off the pill...we've had unprotected sex....what do you think could happen? I'm in shock at your reaction...I need support right now..this is all new to me too.' His response is 'well, I never wanted to have kids...so I'm in shock' I was like 'WHAT? Since when?' He was like 'did you ever hear me say I wanted kids? When....tell me when I said that.' I said 'when my father was dying I said to you as soon as we get married I'd like to start a family.... and you said OK..whenever you want to we can.' He says 'exactly...I said when YOU want to..I never said I wanted too.'
So at this point I am hysterically crying...he's like 'don't you remember saying that I never wanted kids?' I said 'you told me 7 years ago when we first met that you didn't want to get married or have kids....that was 7 YEARS AGO!! You asked me to marry you remember? You said that we could have kids, remember? What are we supposed to do now? You don't want kids, I do...' He says 'I told you we'd have kids because YOU wanted them. I knew that us getting married would = you wanting kids. I'm willing to deal with that - it's my issue not yours. There are 2 people in this relationship' I retorted 'what? your problem not mine? Are you mental?? It's a child not a pet! I don't want to be PG alone! Be excited by myself - raise this child alone.' He says 'since when have you ever had to do anything by yourself? You need to get a grip...either you can deal with me not wanting kids but having them because YOU do OR apparently your acting like you want to go your own separate way. It's your decision. You know where I stand.'
Anyway I cried myself to sleep last night....woke up this morning and my husband comes into the room and says 'feeling better and not so alone now?' he hugs me and says 'we'll get through it if you are.' Let's just say that did not make me feel any better. Get through what? This is not a bad thing...it's a GREAT thing. I'm confused now, hurt and not sure what to do if I am PG or not.

Oh my goodness - I don't even know what to say - I honestly don't know what I would be feeling if I were you - First off - I would want to know if I was PG or not - if you aren't then there are some things you really need to think about - But if you are - then what - you'll basically have to do this alone? Like a single mom but married? Thats ridiculous -
I left my sons father for this reason - he didn't want to help out at all - didn't want kids - However - I wasn't married to him - and my pregnancy was an accident.

I'm am just so sorry that you have to deal with this..

I am so sorry He should have been clearer about his not wanting kids to begin with. This is not a bad thing and I am sorry he is making you feel that way.
I agree with brideinapril, you need to first find out if you are pregnant. If your not then you need to really think about your future, knowing that he does not want to have kids.
Again I am so sorry this is happening! I am here if you need to talk

youll get through this. Have you spoken or told his family? Or form yourself a great support system like you have here. If you have very close relationships with sisters or your/his mom they might be more then overwhelmed then him . He might just also be in complete shock. I wish you well.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

I am sure whatever your husbands reasons for not wanting children are is based out of some kind of fears and I am sure he is talking out of fear.
Talking to men about what if's is also hard, at least it is with my husband. For example he would not get excited that I MIGHT be pregnant but I know when I am he will be excited.
Try to stay calm, when it's time take a pregnancy test then approach the subject with your DH again. When you tell him he will be a father instead of could be his attitude might change and I can't imagine any man not loving his own flesh and blood.

Hang in there! We're here to listen.

I will say that perhaps a councilor would be in order because your husband has not said he doesn't love you or want to be in your marriage...he is saying that he is willing to work on his issues. Having children can be a very scary thing for some people. Perhaps he is very unsure of how he will handle it all or what kind of parent he will be. Do you honestly think that he will not be excited along with you and that you will be raising the child all alone? Maybe he needs time to get used to the changes that come along with a baby and adjusting to these changes. I am just saying that maybe you can work these things out together....

He says that he loves me very much...but why would someone have children for the sake of another??? It makes no sense to me! How can I ever get PG again if I'm not..knowing that he doesn't want kids? Or could he be nervous???

This is just awful. I would second the recommendation of a couples counselor. It sounds to me like the two of you have some very big issues to be worked out, and you shouldn't do it alone. As others have mentioned though, I think it is very clear that he loves you, so with work I'm sure you two can figure this out.

If you are pregnant, his attitude needs to change. And yes, if you aren't pregnant, you should make sure not to get pregnant until this is all figured out.

I think he put you in a terrible situation emotionally. I know it's a place that I would not want to be in. Like you said, how can you make any future plans knowing what he said? It wasn't like he was wishy washy or giving mixed signals. His words were well thought out and clear.

I'm sort of going through the same thing w/my husband. Every once in awhile he throws the 'well YOU got what you wanted' at me regarding the baby. And you know what? He's right. I didn't have her for him or for anyone else's reasons but my own. I wanted her regardless of anything him and I were going through, and anything that may happen between us in the future. I'm not saying he doesn't love her or that he is not good to her, he just likes to throw it out there to hurt me or be a $heet when he's pissy that I wanted a baby more than he did. But that is something I knew beforehand, not like you who assumed based on his actions and words, that he was with you and supported you 100%.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I'm so sorry that you are so upset. I think you have gotten some wonderful advice here. Find out what your status is and then take it from there. Honestly I would be concened about what other apsects of your life he was keeping inside. He needs to give you the full picture so that you can be foreward to make the appropriate choices for your OWN life.

I am so sorry that you have to go through this. I agree with the other girls about the counseling. Maybe he doesn't want children out of fear.

You know, it could very well be nerves... Maybe he was just acting like this because he got nervous from the reality of it...
I hope it all works out for you

I want to start out with CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am so happy for you that you are going to be a mother. Don't let anyone, not even your husband take this excitment away from you. Right now you just think about you and your baby. Give your husband some time to come around. I don't think anyone can not put a smile on their face the first time they hear their babies heartbeat. Hang in there and good luck.

I don't know what to say, except that I agree that you and your husband should go to couple's counseling. Maybe it will help him understand how you feel.
