So after work today I went back to school, my sister had an art gallery reception today so I made a quick cameo. It was my first time back since graduation (well, actually on campus, we cut through SB rd to Nichols sometimes). I didn't think I'd miss it, but I did. It was nice to walk around from the parking lot up to the Student Activities Center, and I'm clearly young enough to still look like a student, so it was kind of nice to blend in and remember a time when I wasn't so stressed, and walk behind a young couple where the guy was CLEARLY trying to chat up the girl to take her back to his dorm, and I kind of missed that too! Well, not the creepy dbags chatting me up per se, but you know, youth and freedom and teenage years.
I don't know, I've been so blah and down and depressed lately, and I hate my job so much, and I always wonder if I should go back to school, or if I made a mistake switching to business to chase the almighty dollar (which clearly has still escaped me) instead of sticking with my real love, linguistics. But all you can really do with that is teach ESL, and my idea of teaching ESL is you're in America speak English dammit! probably wouldn't go over so well. And practically speaking, I just can't go back to school and quit my job and take out more loans. I just feel trapped and miserable.
So after I saw the gallery and left, I came home and visited my cat in the backyard and cried for about 20 minutes on the dirty ground so hard that I started to gag.
Sigh.
And that has been Ali's depressing post of the day!

Re: Visited the old Alma-Mater today...
I'm so sorry you feel like this. Maybe once the wedding is over you can go back to school part time and take up something you truly love. I know how you feel about just being in school and not worrying about things i feel the same sometimes when i start to think back. Just know that you have more exciting things to come in your future

I couldn't agree more. I think you should follow your heart and go for it. It's never too late to pursue a new career path or go back to school.
It's funny you post this, I was talking to one of my coworkers about possibly trying to pursue working for a wedding gown designer as a stylist or something and I said 'Yeah, but I won't do it. I'm 30, I've made it so far here, why would I want to start over?' and he said the most brilliant thing which has really changed my perspective. He said 'Jen, I'm 44, believe me, I realize now that there were so many opportunities I didn't jump on out of fear in my 20's and 30's. It's never too late. If your heart is telling you to try something new, just go for it'. So I am giving you his words of wisdom..

Those are great words, thank you for sharing. I just feel though if I did this, it would be to go back for the sheer sake of being in school, a perma-student, or as my father would say, 'taking up time and space'. Because I do not want to teach, and short of teaching ESL, my other option is to go live with a tribe somewhere and dissect their language, and come back and teach at SB while writing my book on said language LOL. Ahhh....why couldn't I have just wanted to be a teacher, my life would be so much easier.
