Waaay off topic

I didn't want to post this on the TTC board, because it is antithetical to what the girls on that board are trying to achieve.

I am trying to keep from becoming pregnant before my wedding. We are using a condom, but I don't trust them (they can break sometimes). I am not a candidate for the pill because of my age and the fact that I have high blood pressure. I've tried encore oval (spermicide capsule) but it can interrupt spontaneity if you know what I mean.

I really do miss the sponge. It will be back in the U.S. soon but is currently only available in Canada. I feel like I need a trench coat, dark sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat just to be able to purchase my preferred method of birth control!!

I need a Canada connection (friends/family). Anyone willing to FM me with some contacts? TIA!!

I didn't know the sponge was not offered in the U.S. anymore. Any particular reason why? Maybe your OBGYN could suggest an alternative like the shot or the patch? Maybe they have a contact to obtain the sponge?

I think it's great that you were considerate of the ladies on TTC.

Thanks. I'm actually considering changing OBGYN. He's a good doctor, but for 1, he's all 'judgy' in that he thinks I should get married sooner and start trying to conceive asap because of my age. (Don't worry - I'm not a dinosaur.) He's the one who told me the sponge is available in Canada. The plant in the U.S. that was manufacturing them got hit with safety violations and they've all since been corrected, but there's red tape involved so it won't be available again until AFTER I'm married.

P.S. - why is the shot different from the patch or the shot? Aren't they all equivalent to the pill?

I'm not sure. I didn't know if they used different components or chemicals because of how it's applied. That's something the doc should be able to tell you.

You should read about Nuva Ring...my gyn. recommended it big time, but I chose to stick to the pill. It has way less estrogen than the pill but same effectiveness and (from what I am told) harldy any side effects...

Just a suggestion you may want to consider! Good luck!

As you know, anything with hormones has the potential to wreak havoc with your blood pressure. So no shot, ring, patch, pill for you. Have you tried just plain spermicidal jelly, what about the old fashioned diaphragm? Same premise as the sponge just bigger.

There is a female condom on the market but if you think an ovule is killer for spontaneaty, you won't like this contraption.

Check with your GYN about this ...

But for some similar reasons I chose not to use the pill. I use an IUD (Copper T) and it's
been very good so far.

If you can't get a connection to Canada - perhaps you could consider this option?

I really appreciate this feedback. I'm looking for a new FEMALE OB/GYN as we speak.

Get the book taking control (or is it charge?) of your fertility. This book will teach you the signs to look for in your own body that lets you know that you are fertile. Between knowing when and when you are not fertile and the pill you should be covered.
I did not know this before TTC but you only have a 20% shot each month of getting pregnant and that is if you are really trying. Also there are only 5 days in your cycle that you have a chance to get preggo.
Might be something to look into.

It's called 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility'.

You're absolutely right! Too bad a good amount of people that do get pregnant that are not planned pregnancies should have thought about this.
