Wait Staff and the Hall Gratuity

Wait Staff and the Hall Gratuity

I know we've gone back and forth on this, in regards to whom is included in the gratuity on your hall, so when I went for my meeting, I flat out asked about the wait staff. I mentioned I was in the catering business previously, and it was confirmed that the gratuity goes toward paying the wait staff's salary and not as an additional tip. I appreciated my BM's honesty, because when I asked previously to the person who I didn't like who is no longer there () she kept insisting that they get it as a tip. My BM assured me that they do get paid well, which I don't disagree, but she told me if I wished to tip them I could do so. The bartenders usually get tipped by everyone and more frequently, it's surprising that people forget about their waiters, so I want to make sure I take care of them as well.

Anyhoo, IF it is at all possible ladies, please think to perhaps tip the wait staff as well, you'd be surprised to see how often that they never get tipped because people assume they do by what's included in the gratuity to the hall. I know it's hard and there's a lot of money we're throwing around, but I remember what it was like and I'll be budgeting in tips for them when we do our envelopes.

how much are you planning on tipping each waitperson

I'm budgeting $20 each. I wouldn't go above that, especially considering the amount of tables.

The one thing about Gratuity that stinks, all of the wait staff have to split the 18%, as for the bartenders they only spilt between the other bartender. At my hall I heard the BM makes the waitstaff, bartender, Maitre er de, and bridal attendent spilt there tips with him and his sister. I was annoyed by that. He better be kissing my butt for that.

warning -- money vent below:

I don't think it's fair that the 'service charge' is not distributed as a gratuity to everyone at the hall. It blows my mind that we have to give them more money on top of the service charge. Makes me nuts

No, I totally understand. I mean, it does get distributed to them, but it pays their salaries. Remember, a tip is for good service. If you get an a*s for a waiter, leave 'em chewed up filet in your napkin instead! Ew, sorry, it's the end of the day and I'm getting nasty!
