Walking down the aisle

Walking down the aisle

Hi Ladies! I have been a member for about a year but haven't posted much at all. I have used this website as a big help though all wedding planning and especially love reading reviews!

Anyway, I have a CRAZY story to tell - but kind of want to keep my life private since this is the internet and all. But my wedding was supposed to be 2 weeks ago, and it was postponed due to 2 deaths over the summer (FH dad and my mom). After all the agony and pain, we decided to just go through with the wedding, so it is in a few months!

So, who walks me down the aisle?? I am an only child, and my father died when I was a kid. Now I don't have a mom. I don't really want to ask an uncle or cousin to walk me. My mom raised me completely on her own and I feel like having someone else walk me is kind of stabbing her in the back in some strange way. Can anyone share any experiences they have had with walking down the aisle alone - or walking alone halfway and meeting DH to walk down the rest with you???

Also,if you did walk alone, was it nervewracking? I feel like if I did it alone I would be trembling like a nutjob.

I love the idea of him meeting me halfway, my big crazy greek family is of course dead set against the idea. They don't realize that traditions went out the window months ago!

Thanks in advance for your input!!!

Re: Walking down the aisle

Sorry to hear about all of your losses.

I don't have experience, but my coworker's wife walked alone and it was fine.

I don't think there is anything saying that someone needs to walk you down the aisle- heck, in my church wedding planner book, one of the options is to walk down the aisle alone! It must mean that people actually do it!

Since your background is a little different, I agree- traditions are gone! I love the idea of your FH meeting your halfway down the aisle. Did you think of having one person from your dad's side and one person from your mom's side walk you down together?

I am so sorry to hear this. I think that, no matter what you decided to do, your mom will be watching over you and be proud of whatever decision you make. She will be there for you in spirit. If you walk by yourself, you can have a bouquet charm on your bouquet with your mom's picture. That way, it feels like she is right there with you

Happy to hear that walking alone is an option in your church book! So it isn't unheard of.
I told my family, and they were in shock that I was considering it.

The idea of me meeting FH halfway is growing on me! He has been my rock through all of this so I think the symbolism is nice...

I think that walking halfway by yourself and then having your FH meet you is a great idea. I saw it on a wedding show recently (the girls FH met her and they walked the rest of the way together) and it was beautiful!!

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, that is a lot to handle all at once but atleast you an FH are able to weather the storm together

I do like the idea of meeting FH half way I think that would look really beautiful and be very symbolic and meaningful

but if you do have someone that you are close to who you regard as a someone who is always there for you I don't think it would be a bad idea to have them walk you. I don't think your mother would think it was a stab in the back.

Re: Walking down the aisle

Thanks for the input and support. When I think about another relative walking me down, it just doesn't feel 'right'. But when I think of FH meeting me halfway and walking the rest together, it feels right in my heart. (cheesy I know!)

Now just to bring up the subject with him.
He's definitely the more traditional one of the couple. He wanted an uncle of mine who I haven't had a relationship with in 10 years to walk me down! Just so someone does it!

Who makes up these traditions anyway???

I am SO, so sorry to hear about your losses.

I think it is fine for you to walk down alone. You have to do what is comfortable for you.

My friends father is walking me down the aisle because my father doesnt want to come and my brother really didnt want to and my uncle who said he would be honored lost his battle to cancer at 36 a year ago. My friends father has been like a father figure and Im honored to have him do it

I am so sorry to hear about all of the grief you two have recently had to deal with. One positive to all of this is I am sure the tragedies you both have had to face has probably brought you so much closer on a level other couples can't even imagine.

There definitely is no right or wrong answer here, and whatever means most to you will be perfect. The only option I haven't heard is if you have any siblings, if they would walk you down. Or are you an only child?

On your losses.

I am walking down the aisle and my FH is meeting me half way. He wasn't upset and he is more traditional. Yes, he is my rock too, we have been through a lot of ups and downs, but we stay strong and that's why I love the idea.

I lose my dad at two and my stepdad at 13. Yes, I have brothers and uncles but they are all selfish, so why get them the spotlight for something they didn't honor. My mother didn't want to do it and love idea of our journey start together from that point. I think you will have a beautiful wedding.

So sorry for your losses, but happy that you have the courage to have the wedding. I think meeting your FH halfway would be really nice and symbolic in a way! I say go for it!

i'm so sorry to hear about your losses...i think that if you don't have anyone significant that you feel comfortable walking down with-walking alone is perfectly fine! It is your and FH day and it should be about what makes you happy. I think him meeting you halfway is also a great symbolism of everything you guys have gone through. Make your decision based on what makes you happy and comfortable! Best of luck
