my father is walking me down the aisle so i was going to ask my older brother to walk my mom down. he wasn't originally a part of my bridal party, but if i have him walk my mother down, does he have to have a tux to match the other groomsmen or is he still not really a part of the BP and can just wear whatever suit he was originally planning on?

It's up to you, but my brother is also walking my mom down the aisle and I asked him if he can wear a tux matching the dads, also a buttoniere, IMO he is very important to me and I kinda want him to stick out.

I was in this same exact situation, so we decided to ask my brother to be an Usher at the wedding since the BM will be with the Groom, it only left 2 groomsmen to escort guests, so this makes it three. However, we're putting my brother in a striped vest to distinguish him from the other's, but will be in the same color tux.

Excellent idea. My BIL is walking my Mom down the aisle (sister's husband) and I didn't know how to dress him-thanks!

I agree with changing up the vest or asking him to wear the same color as your dad that way it sets him aside and he isn't 'in the BP'.

I think its really up to you. My Bro is in the BP and walking my mom down (so he will be in a tux) but I think its really up to you. Anything goes these days.
