I just want to warn everyone; you may have heard of this, but in case not I wanted to share. Over the weekend someone started making unauthorized charges with my check card -- over $800 worth!! When they posted on Monday I called my bank, because I didn't make the charges, but I still had my check card, so I didn't understand how anyone could be making charges.
The fraud control department explained to me that someone had 'skimmed' my card -- when I used it to pay at a restaurant someone swiped it into a device that captures the electronic information, then they swipe a blank card through the same machine, which encodes that card with my information. They use this new card to go shopping and I never even know my card has been 'stolen'!! I can't believe that happened to me! I haven't used my card in any areas I thought were sketchy!!
Thankfully the bank is crediting back my account, but I just want to warn everyone. I have only used the card recently in my local neighborhood, so I think it happened in East Northport.

I think it might have happened at Anna's Pizzeria. I don't want to believe that, because it's my neighborhood pizzeria, but it's the only place I used the card in the past five days and it's the only place in the past two weeks where they haven't swiped it right in front of me. I made a charge there around noon and the other charges began happening that evening.
My bank told me not to call the merchant and to let them handle it, but if it's a rouge employee who's doing this I don't want it to happen to anyone else.
ETA: I'm not blaming Anna's because I really don't know and the people there are so nice, but you might be careful if you go there.

WOW thats crazy. Don't worry about the pizza place, would you believe that happened to us at Tavern On the Green!?

Yikes, don't worry. Right now there is no way to tell for sure where it happened (unfortunately, I may never know). But if you use your credit card there, just be careful. Personally, I can't believe that any of the people who work there would do that (they all seem like really nice people), but I would be careful.

wow...i used to work across from anna's! but it can happen anywhere. that is so scary. I'm glad the bank is on your side!

Had this done to me and my SIL in JUne.. we were both shopping at a HUGE store in westbury?????????....and the only place either of us had used our cards that month... get a call two months later that they are sending me a new one with new numbers because'back in june' someone had gotten my info from a store that had an 'unfaithful' employee and was taking CC info from customers they tried to use it but it was declined since they had it under my maiden name and I had recently changed it to my married name since they had to put in info and had 'old' info.. it drew a reg flag on the acct... (SIL got the same call... same CC company and we were together that day) Was glad to hear from the CC co or I would have never known......
