DH just got a message from MasterCard that someone in Rome has charged to our card several times over the past two days. We were in Rome last month and purposely used our credit card minimally - only for accomodation, once in the supermarket and once for dinner. Someone along the line got a hold of the number...
This happened to my mother not too long ago as well - she bought something over the internet and the company was based in Rome. Within the next few weeks, there were several purchases charged to her card that were made in Europe.

this just happened with fh also..the bank called and said that they charge a few dollars first to make sure it works and then they go for the gusto. he had to close the account..good thing they are on top of this stuff

Ugh! DH had this happen here with his ATM card. He got charged for movie tickets and we were no where near the area at the time.

I know it *****, but Mastercard will take care of it and you won't have to pay any of the charges. They are a good company.

oooh, the same thing happened to my mom when my parents went to Seattle.

For this reason, I have one credit card that is the only one I use online and it has a $500 limit. I hope that if someone gets it, the worst case scenario is that they would charge no more than $500 before it is refused.
My SIL is from South America and is very skeptical of credit cards b/c she says that in her home country, there is a lot of buying and selling of stolen credit cards.

DH does advertising for NatWest bank, so we have their MasterCard Black Card for free - it's like AMEX platinum or something. We're completely covered. They actually sent him a text via cell phone RE: the charges. The largest purchase they made was at a watch/jewellry shop for over £500, but there were a few others too. I just don't understand how you can buy a $900 watch in a shop with just a number...DH says they must've cloned the card, but he thinks you need to swipe a card to be able to clone it. They didn't swipe our card, just took down the number, when we paid for the short term apartment rental. So it was either the supermarket or the restaurant!
