Was I wrong ?? Sorry it is so Long

The other night I showed my FSIL and FMIL a pic of a gown that I had tried on and liked. Neither one said anything other than oh who makes that and how much is it. I honestly don't remember them saying anything like it is pretty or anything in that order.

So Last night I went to their house with FH and only FFIL was there he kinda looked me up and down and I was waitin for another you need to go on a diet joke. And he says when are you going looking for a gown I was like I dont know why. Well make sure you invite FMIL to come with you so she dosnt feel left out.

Well obvousily she said something to him about it. And I guess I hurt her feelings by not asking her to go. My thinking is I have a mother and a sister that I wanted to go with me. It just so happened that we went looking for a dress for my sister and decided to try on wedding gowns while we are there.

The problem is she was very involved with both of her nieces weddings b/c one mother is just not with it and the others lived in FL so she feels that she should have this kinda control of my wedding too.
FMIL wants to get involved with every aspect of the wedding and I really dont want her too. If I need help or want an opinion I will ask her for it. I am a very independant person compared to her children I don't need mommy to help me with every little thing.

She has a big mouth and is trying to tell me how to plan a party b/c she threw a bar mitzvah 15yrs ago and is now the expert wedding planner. Mean time I have planned at least 15 corporate parties for over 500 people and helped my sister with her wedding less than a year ago. I know what I want and what I dont.
As it is when we booked the hall her and her daughter embarrassed me in front of the catering mgr by trying to come off as these hot shots which just by looking at them their not. I walked out of the hall apolgizing to the guy.
I didnt want a production at a bridal salon. B/c I knew it was going to be her and her daughter and they were going to take over everything and end up embarrassing me their too.
Ok Sorry for the rambling on but was I wrong not to invite her to go??

Nope, you're not wrong. You have decided who to go with- your mom and your sister. End of story.

edited to say: you shouldn't have to feel obligated to bring her anywhere and it was very inappropriate for your FFIL to comment otherwise.

I feel your pain. I don't know what to tell you, but I DO feel your pain.

I personally don't think you were wrong not to ask her to go. The thought never crossed my mind to invite my fmil - this is something that I always planned on doing with my mother and sister. JMO

When I picked out my gown, I went with my mom and sister. Later on, after I already ordered the gown, my FMIL and FSIL's wanted to see it so I went back and tried it on for them. They are very nice people and not controlling...and I still didn't bring them the first time. I don't think you were wrong. Maybe find something (that you don't care that much about) to give to your FMIL as a job, maybe to occupy her time and make her feel important.

Nope, I went with mother. When my gown comes in I aksed FMIL to come, she was happy with that. I would suggest that to her if you want.

I went with Mom and God Mother - It never even dawned on me that FMIL would be interested. You should not feel guilty at all.

You are right. It is too difficult anyway to pick a gown (or anything else) when you have a lot of people. Also picking out a dress is a bonding experience between a daughter and a mother. Try using those excuses if you have to, but I would not feel like I had to say anything.

Thanks Girls.

I just have a feeling that someone is going to make a comment about it again.

My plan was to take her when I went to pick it up. But I am now planning on ordering it from Pearl's Place since I am going to save a lot of $$ on it. I guess I could invite her to come to my house to see it when it comes in b/c my mother is a dress maker and it is going to do all the alteration at the house.

Thanks again for your help

I think there are certain things you should try to include you FMIL with - like if you go to a wedding showcase, invite her along, if she's good w/ flowers or something- ask her opinion- don't completely leave her out (although I can see why you might WANT to) but just do the right thing and no one can complain-
AS FOR TAKING HER GOWN SHOPPING- I am having the same problem - I am close w/ my mom and my sister and I don't see ANY reason why FMIL should be invited to come-
A lot of brides WANT their FMIL there and that's great, I don't. - I also feel like there are just some things that are special for ME AND MY MOM do be doing together - shopping for my gown is one of them. and although I go out of my way to include my FMIL and FSIL in the wedding, I will not do it at the expense of my OWN mother or sister's feelings - you know ??
I don't think you were wrong.- When you pick the gown and order it, offer to bring her to see it - that was my plan
