Wearing Black to a Wedding?

I'm going to a relative's wedding in February. It's Black Tie so of course I didn't know what to wear! I got mixed reviews on what black tie meant, but I finally found a gorgeous, one shoulder black satin dress. It's knee-length and has an applique on the side. I was so happy until I told someone about it and they said 'Oh, can you wear black to a wedding?' Has anyone heard about this? I've worn black to weddings before and didn't think it was a bad thing. I always thought black looks the most formal! Any thoughts?

I think it's absolutely fine to wear black and the dress sounds gorgeous!

yes you can wear black to weddings! I do it all the time and a majority of people wear black to them haha... it's the most flattering color so alot of people end up wearing navy blues and blacks

I think wearing black to a wedding is definitely ok, especially during the dreary winter months.

I ALWAYS wear black to weddings! Plenty of people do. I've never heard of someone saying you can't wear black.

I always wear black especially if it's at night. I just went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago and I think 75% of the women were wearing black!

Uhm. I've worn black to 3 of the 4 weddings I've been to in the past 8 months lol

Black is timeless and classic.

If you were telling me it was a day wedding... then I would say to rethink the black. But since you're saying its a black tie event... a black dress is totally appropriate.

Also. Upload a picture of the dress so we can see it!

I ALWAYS wear a black dress! I think it's the most formal, flattering, and I don't have to worry about wearing the same color as the bridesmaids!

I heard you shouldnt wear red.. I know you never wear white..But Black is all good for weddings? Is it a culture thing for her maybe?
