I'm clueless. Can someone explain these to me? Why do people announce their Engagements and Weddings in local papers? Why did this even come about? No offense to anyone who's doing it, I just don't think I get it.

I guess so that people you might not be in contact with can see it? or to have your name in the paper so you can cut it out and save it? Its kind of like a public save the date too! I didnt do it, but I think it would be cool to see it in the paper! edit added: come to think of it, people put in birth and birthday announcements, and death announcements too.

I think it's really an old tradition, back in the day it was only society people who did announcements ...
