FH is in the property management business and does a lot of construction/home repair work. I've heard soooooo many different opinions from jewelry stores about what kind of ring to buy him. One woman the other day even told me that anyone in that type of business should never wear a ring, period! Well, FH definitely wants to wear his ring everyday and now I'm really torn about what kind to get him.
Titanium, tungsten and stainless steel are cheaper, more durable and will not scratch, but are impossible to remove in an emergency. Gold is much more expensive (especially right now!) and can be cut off easier in an emergency, but will evidence a lot more wear and tear.
What would you do? Is anyone else having a similar problem?

Re: Wedding band for FH who does construction work
FH does a lot of manual labor (Construction, Auto Work), and I know that if he had to take his ring off constantly it would be gone in no time. He decided to get tungsten - he likes the durability, the weight and the color. I know they say it can't be cut off in an emergency, but when I asked him about that, he shrugged and said he's not really worried about it. I just went along with what he wanted.

Re: Wedding band for FH who does construction work
My fh does tile work and we also were concerned about his ring getting ruined. He is going to get a tattoo band, and then he will also have a regular ring to wear when not at work. Another suggestion could be to get a chain so that he could wear the ring around his neck. I know a lot of Dr.'s do this since they cannot wear rings in the operating room. One thing about tungsten that our jeweler warned us about: it is such a strong metal that if it falls on ceramic tile, the tile will actually break! Hope this helps, good luck!

Re: Wedding band for FH who does construction work
My Fh does exactly what yours does for work and we decided that its probably better that he doesnt wear anything. If we have somewhere to go or when he comes home he'll wear it. but i wouldnt want him to be stuck with a ring on his finger. I've seen what he looks like when he walks through that door everynight lol its not a pretty sight and i dont want him ruining anything.

Re: Wedding band for FH who does construction work
My FH is a mechanic for Air Jamaica and he isn't sure what to do, either. And he is also allergic to stainless steel and lots of other metals so I think we're going to end up getting him Titanium. He doesn't plan to wear it everyday at work anyway. He says he will wear it on a chain around his neck while he's at work.

Re: Wedding band for FH who does construction work
FH and I had this discussion. He wanted titanium or tungeston carbide. We looked at them online and they sounded like a good deal. Many girls on here said good things as well. They hold up very well according to most. I think Titanium could be engraved and sized by an experienced jeweler the Tungeston CANNOT.
We spoke to my Dad to get his input, since he works on LARGE equipment(builds nuclear powerplants). He told us that the companies he works for, refuse to let anyone wear titanium or tungeston on the jobsite. It will not break and needs a specific tool to remove or cut. He has safety meetings all the time about guys getting fingers cut off if their ring hand would get caught in machinery. My Dad wears a white gold(not to work) and his band shows the wear and tear of a 30+ year marriage. It seemed to hold up well enough!!!

Re: Wedding band for FH who does construction work
my fh is a carpenter too and he got a tungsten carbide ring. He wasn't planning on wearing it to work, since its too dangerous. He was just going to put it on when he got home. But maybe i can mention the chain idea! Oh and thanks for the info about not being able to engrave tungsten, i had no idea and was planning on doing that soon, but i guess not! Which is no big deal cuz my ring is too small to engrave!

Re: Wedding band for FH who does construction work
DH works with all dif kinds of metals in his job and he INSISTED on tungsten and the good news is IT CAN be cut off in emergency
we had to cut his off last week because he jammed his finger in BJJ practice and went to the emergency room and they cut it off..NO PROBLEM
so IT CAN..no matter what people are telling you..i witnessed it with my own eyes being cut off
i just dont remember what they used to cut it
luckily it was covered and we got a new one the next day..its still a little swollen so he hasnt put it back on his hand yet

Re: Wedding band for FH who does construction work
FH has tungsten drill bits - they don't cut or scratch, but if pressure is applied in a certain way (i.e. with a bolt cutter), it will definitely shatter, so it's not completely indestructable. which makes me feel better

My FH is a tile man too!! In addition, he's not much of a jewelry fan either. We're going to get something nice but not overly fancy and he'll wear it on a chain around his neck and on his finger for fancy occaisions. He is also going to get a tattoo 'for me' (not a ring - he already has his fingers done).
For me it's more of a safety issue rather than an issue of whether the ring can take the abuse. My dad was a mechanic for 40 years and never wore his ring. Only on special occaisions and now, since he's retired. He had a friend who's wife INSISTED he wear it. Well, that stopped the day he was working on a car and got shocked to hell when the ring touched the carbuerator. Same with my great-uncle. He was in the paving business and actually got caught on the back of a moving dump truck by, you guessed it, his wedding ring.

My FH is in sanitation and we just picked out a gold ring that has a design on it. Nothing fancy but just a little more than the plain classic ring.

Re: Wedding band for FH who does construction work
I bout DH two wedding bands, a white gold one for every day and a fancier one with diamonds for going out and special occassions. DH is a bus driver and the constant motion of the steering wheel and door operations is hard on the rings.

Re: Wedding band for FH who does construction work
this sounds really silly but can you get him a nice ring to wear when he's not at work, and a really cheapy placeholder ring (like plastic or ribbon or something VERY easy to cut off that still looks like and signifies a wedding ring) to wear during work?
