Wedding band rant

Wedding band rant

FH and I went to Kay Jeweler's this afternoon hoping to look at some Celtic and Claddagh bands. We walked in and one of the saleswoman was finishing up speaking with another couple. As soon as she saw us and asked what we were looking for, we said we wanted to look at Celtic rings. She quickly corrected us (pronouncing it wrong, mind you...as it's a hard -c unless you're referring to the basketball team) and then said they didn't have any in-stock, but there were some in their catalog. She set it down on the counter and walked away, but we had some questions.

A man working on some paperwork behind the counter (a manager?) noticed we needed help, and he kindly asked her to give us some attention. She came over and tried getting us to sign up for a Kay card and pay a deposit on rings that were in the catalog. When I told her I wasn't interested, she walked away, so the man helped us out, letting us try on a few rings. He was very nice and didn't pressure us at all, suggesting we look on their website and go to one or two more stores to get a better idea what we really wanted. I really want Celtic bands, but it seems like no one carries them unless they;re a specialty jeweler, and the only Irish jeweler near our house closed up about a year ago.

The sales people at Kay are always rude. Also they totally rip you off. If you go to a smaller family owned place you get get something way nicer and for a better price. I know it's kinda far but FH went to Philly to their diamond distract to get my e-ring and we went back (to a different jewelers) for my wedding band. I totally subject taking the trip there, it's also a fun day and you get to east cheese steaks lol

Re: Wedding band rant

Funny thing is, we avoided Zales because of the bad reviews we read about their service and quality of jewelry. My heart was set on Kay because of all the 'good' reviews and the inventory they had on-line.

There's another jeweler where my parent's bought me a beautiful ring for my 18th birthday, but they won't have Celtic bands because they're an Italian jeweler. But they're small and family-owned, and my ring from them is still in great condition. We'll prob. give up on the Celtic ring idea and just go to them since they're trusted in the community.

Re: Wedding band rant

Have u looked to see if they have the Clattah (I may have spelt that wrong) rings? Just because it's Italian owned doesn't mean they won't have them. Those are pretty common so it would be silly for them not to sell them!

That sucks that the CS there was so bad. Would you consider looking online? I'm sure there is a better variety of claddagh or celtic knot rings to choose from.

Re: Wedding band rant

I have no clue what kind of 'celtic' ring you want to get but e-weddingbands has decent reviews. I'd probably look online.

There should be a bigger selection in the UK, maybe order online? I just googled this and it came up.

I refuse to think that here on long island only the mall stores would carry celtic rings. There's got to be more regardless of who owns the shops.

Good luck!

Re: Wedding band rant

ordering our bands on-line is out of the question. FH has never worn a ring, and so needs to have his ring finger sized...etc. We need to see the ring in person before dropping hundreds of dollars, you know?

There is a thread in Brides helping Brides where the bride is looking to purchase Celtic bands, and she is told to go on-line as well. i know there has to be a store that has them in-stock, it's just a matter of research and word-of-mouth.

Re: Wedding band rant

we're probably just going to go to the family-owned Italian jewelers near us who have a very good reputation. They won't rip us off, and as another girl said, they probably have Claddagh rings which are common in all jewelry stores (except for the Kay we went to).

Re: Wedding band rant

There are only a handful of Irish shops still open on LI. Maybe you should check them out? Claddagh rings are beautiful, but they are a ring unto themselves and probably won't go with your engagement ring. It'll look like you're wearing 2 different rings on 1 finger.

Is it the design that's important, or do you want the rings to be FROM Ireland? If that's the case, beware, a lot of authentically Irish companies, like Waterford, have their products made elsewhere!

we went to the kay store out in the riverhead outlets. heather is amazing and so patient and wonderful to work with. she went above and beyond for us and far exceeded our expectations. she proved me wrong about any presumptions i had about kay jewelers.

Gennaro's has a pretty good selection of celtic and claddaugh wedding bands! We looked at them for FH but they ended up being a little to busy for him. We are still on a search for his wedding band!

I had the same issue at Kays where the woman actually said well we have nothing here for you and left. Zales it was.
