Brand new here, and have a question about the price of my cake. I'm working with my RH recommended baker on an upgrade from the cake that is included in my package.
It will be 4 tier, fondant. It will look something like this but in gold:
I will be supplying the topper. There will also be columns between the 1st and 2nd tiers so that I can fit another topper on it.
They're quoting me $1275 for the upgrade. Does this seem right? It's alot more than I was expecting it to be, but I also have no reference and nothing to compare it to. Just want to make sure they're not overcharging me.
Thanks! :)

that is ALOT for an upgrade!!!!! Most places charge $5-10 a slice, and they are charging you that much for just one extra tier (I'm assuming 3 tiers were included in your package). I personally think that is ridiculous, and would expect $500 at most for the upgrade

I'm actually not sure how many tiers are included in the package, but I'm being told that I need 4 tiers to serve 175. I know fondant is expensive, but the cake doesn't seem THAT labor intensive since there aren't really any intricate details on it. It just doesn't seem to make sense.
I'm thinking of getting quotes from other bakeries, but I already did (and paid for) the tasting with this baker (which was a LONG process since I'm pretty picky, and the cake is really important to me), and I don't want to have to go through all that again.

fondant upcharge is usually $1-2 per slice.
ETA- why did you pay to taste? especially if they are part of your package. this seems very fishy.

That is A LOT to pay but I think the cause of the high price is all of the hand-painting that is going to go on that cake. All of that silver.. I think it's Mickey's head?.. has to be hand-painted on.

This!
Most bakeries would even charge for a tasting anyway, let alone if they are included in your hall's price. That layered with the ridiculous price for your upgrade? Find a new Bakery!

My cake is included for my venue, but only 3 tiers are included but we can do fondant, buttercream, whipped cream, whatever with no charge extra. We are going to ask to make it four tiers as well, but I really wouldn't expect it to be more than a couple hundred extra.
My friend got married in March, and still had the best wedding cake I've ever eaten. It was from the Sweet Peace in Lynbrook. If you decide to look elsewhere, check them out!

Those silver Mickey Mouse ears look pretty labor intensive to me. I haven't contacted the bakery yet but will in a few weeks to do my tasting. But I'm probably just going to do a plan cake cause I really don't want to pay for an upgrade!!!
I guess the questions is how much would it be at a whole new bakery??? The upgrade price is $1,275 but if a new bakery would charge you $2,000 then you're 'saving' money. If your heart is set on this cake of course.

Even if I would have went with the cake that was included in the package, there would not have been a tasting included. I would have had to pick from basic chocolate/yellow/marble cake and the standard pudding/mousse fillings.

they wouldnt be hand painted, he was going to make a stamp and emboss them on the fondant. sounds pretty easy to me.

We had our tasting yesterday. Our bakery ignored us for a good half hour and told us anything in one book was included, but then told us what we wanted from that book was an additional charge. All in all, we're being charged an additional $75 just because we want square instead of round and are having scrollwork done on one layer...
If it wasn't a part of our package through the RH, I ABSOLUTELY would have walked out.
Seems so many of these bakeries are just out to rip us off...
ETA: We knew from the get-go that fondant would also have been an upgrade...

That's a lot, but it doesn't surprise me. Adding tiers is a lot as is fondant, and all of the detailing adds to it as well. Could you do regular icing instead of fondant? That would definitely keep the price down.

I don't know if it's possible to do the stamping on icing? I'm also not sure if it would like as nice...worth considering though
I'm gonna go to Rolling Pin (my RH's new recommended baker) tomorrow and see if they can give me a quote. Anyone have experience with Rolling Pin?

We went to five bakeries, hated the RH vendor, before we found Leonetti's and love them. They are still expensive though, outrageous really, but at least we feel like they will make us a nice cake according to what we want.

We upgraded with the Rh's bakery and it also goes by cake choice and filing choices. We had 2 cake choices and 2 different filling choices on each layer of the 3 layer cake. The shape of the cake also matters, my cake had rounded edges so the fondant had to be perfect. The cake was delish and exectly what I wanted. The cakes in the book that were included were not. It was an extra $700, with everything else that was spent, I cut out something that wasn't as important to us like the limo and went in the party bus with everyone else.

Hi ladies, I'm a soon to be chef specializing in cakes and based on this design it seems like they quoted you the right price. Despite the simplicity of the design making a tiered cake is still labor intensive because it involves building a structure underneath the tiers (doweling), hand painting the details individually if you want it gold, and the castle on top looks like it is made of pastillage which is actually very difficult and timely to construct. Even if the design is simple it does not necessarily mean it would be less labor. HTH!

They made my wedding cake (also in march) and it was AMAZING.
