wedding cakes not provided by hall

How many of you are using wedding cakes not provided by the hall??? and why??? Most halls provide their own, is there a reason not to use it....and what is the deal with a groom's cake. I've seen posts about them but i've never been at a wedding with one.

Shot in the dark here, but most places include only standard cakes in the package. For instance at Villa Lombardi the very fancy cakes with rolled fondit(sp?) were $300-$500 extra. At the point of $500, it may pay to get what you want. (I dont know the prices of cakes, keep in mind)

Groom cake, I'm not too sure. With all the food, I'll be lucky to have room for a standard cake!

If it is going to cost me extra, I am then going to just go to one of my favorite bakeries and give them the business. (Unfortunately, I have MANY)

When I was going to use the Irish Coffee Pub for my reception they didnt have a cake I liked so I was going to go to Audreys in Sayville and get my cake, but since I am using the Meadow Club for my reception I have a choice of about 20 cakes all more gorgeous than the next so I am not going to bring in my own.

Using hall cake. One less thing to worry about.

We chose not to do the hall cake.
It could have saved $$$ BUT most of our families are really into the cake tasting a certain way and unfortunately my hall would not have been able to duplicate a west indian type of cake. If not for this reason I would have used their cake.
