Wedding dress blues
I took today off work, planning some beach time and maybe some golf... but the beach was out beacuse of the weather, and for the same reason I didn't make golf plans, sodecided to 'sneak' off to a wedding dress shop. (we just picked the date and place). Before I went, I went to my weight watchers meeting (I joined 3 weeks ago). While I was there, I earned my 5lb sticker (I am now 150lbs - pushing for 135 - 140 for 5/25/03). ... long story, and I'm getting there. Anyway, so off I go to a bridal shop, and try on size 10, and then size 12, and then 14. Size 16 fitted in most places!!! I'm discouraged to say the least. I went to Davids Bridal in Carle Place, and was disappointed in teh service. I really thought I could stop in, find a dress, and be done (silly me). I'm hoping all bride to be are tryin on dresses that are not their normal clothing size. Also, now I need the name of other bridal shops - I'm thinking of Lillete's in Baldwin. If you read all of this, thanks, now doe you have any suggestions??
Thanks

Re: Wedding dress blues
Hi...don't be worried about the size...unfortunately the bridal industry is stuck in the middle ages with regards to sizing...I have been in several bridal parties and even my dress was 3 sizes larger than my normal dress size...so don't be discouraged!!!! David's is good in the fact that if your are not a size 10, you can try on a dress in your actual size, but you don't go there to feel special about being a bride. I have heard good things about Lillette's from my FSIL. Good luck and keep smiling

Re: Wedding dress blues
wouldnt you think they would size the dresses to make the brides feel great about themselves instead of the opposite?! I never understood that! I am a size 4/6 and have been trying on size 10 gowns. anyway, congrats on your 5lb loss and dont get discouraged! I had a great experience at Lillettes, also i have visited Bridal Reflections in Carle Place and Massapequa, Bridal Couture of Manhasset and RK Bridal as well as a few other city locations. THe dress shopping is more involved than i had anticipated too but it can be fun, I swear!Happy hunting....

Re: Wedding dress blues
Well I totally understand. I'm a plus size who is DYING to lose weight. (still waiting on the 'miracle' pill)
I would say not to worry most dresses run small. I ordered my dress from Lillette's they've got a great selection. Good Luck!

Re: Wedding dress blues
Don't be sad. Just remember that for some reason the bridal industry doesn't want to evolve with the times. I was so upset a couple of years ago when I was in my friends wedding and although I usually wear an 8/10 - the people at the store asked me first if I was planning on losing weight before the wedding - I was not pleased - then said they thought I should order a size 16 to be on the safe size. I ended up with a 14 and it fit pretty well. So just try not to pay too much attention to the number.

Re: Wedding dress blues
I'm normally a 6 or 8 and my dress is a 12
I was very pleased with the service I received from:
Princess Bridals - Farmingdale (where I bought my dress)
Bonaventure - Garden City
Lillette's - Baldwin
Good luck with your search & don't get discouraged!

Re: Wedding dress blues
Welcome to the wonderful world of dress shopping!!I am usually a size 8. The dresses I tried on were 12s and 14s. Don't sweat it! Don't even look at the numbers, just try on for size.
My BMs were equally surprised at their sizes. The dresses they chose also run small.
I was happy with the service and selection at Bonaventure in Garden City, Macys in Manhasset. Bridal Reflections in Carle Place has a huge selection, but the morning I went, they were very, very busy and I felt the service a bit rushed. I've heard many good things about them. Maybe I went on the wrong day.
If you want to poke around and look at dresses on your own, you can't beat RK in NYC. They allowed me plenty of time to pick dresses on my own, then a sales lady helped me try on. I really enjoyed my experience there. Don't go on a Saturday afternoon-it's a zoo!!
Good luck and have fun shopping. Don't eliminate any style until you try it on! Your dress is out there, and you'll know it as soon as you put it on.

Re: Wedding dress blues
the bridal industry sizes differently because they charge extra for 'plus sizes' for the extra material. so a girl who is normally an 8, must order a 14 dress which is considered a 'plus size' and pay extra. that goes for bm dresses as well. its sick, its twisted, but this is what they do. its all about the money, despite what it does to our heads! i normally wear a 4 and ordered a size 8 bm dress ( i thought it would be huge). but it fits!

Re: Wedding dress blues
Don't worry about the sizes, I took a dress 2 sizes bigger than my normal size. I ordered my dress from Lillettes, if you go ask for Geri she is so patient and really helped me find a dress. I must have tried on 25 dresses until I found the one I liked. The owner of the store actually said to her 'after this one, that is it' because I was there such a long time, which made me a little angry but Geri is so good that it made me stay and the last dress was 'the dress'. So I would definitely go there to look. Good luck

Re: Wedding dress blues
I agree -- I was about a size 12 when I tried on dresses --> but I couldn't actually 'try on' a thing -- the dress shops used elastic bands that they pinned on to give me an idea of what the dresses would look like on... And the fact that I actually have boobs made it even worse..Besides, a lot of these dresses cost thousands --it'd be expensive to keep every size in stock. Anyway -don't sweat it -- You're not alone. You're still the same size you were wen you walked into the store -- and it's not like the tag with the size on it is worn on the outside!
Good luck!
