Even though I am not a traditionalist, there has been some family debate on this issue.
Who traditionally buys the wedding extras such as the cake topper, unity candle, cake knife, garter, toasting glasses, anything else you can think of? What are you guys doing?
Thanks.

I received my cake knife and garter at my shower. Toasting flutes I actually bought myself because I saw something I really liked a while ago. I haven't decided on a cake topper, but I will probably buy it for myself. You could put these items on your registry if you like.

I just get them myself or they are a gift
I don't think there is an etiquette rule about this topic. I am sure I will get a garter (although I am not throwing it) at my shower. My Great-Aunt got me toasting flutes as a gift. I don't want a cake topper. But I would just end up getting myself what I want if no one else did.

the catholic church gives you a basic untity candle if you want, we didn't know that so I purchased an awesome one at this store in Bellmore. My future MIL bought me a garter to keep and a throw garter.
My MOH's mother is from waterford and when she went to Ireland she picked me up a set!

thanks everyone! I just wanted to see what people are doing.
I figured I would just buy the stuff but my fmil says to register for it and my mom thinks family should get it for me. Figure I will wait and see what the shower brings!

If you are having a shower and the mothers are saying you should put it on your list, maybe they are planning to get the items for you. Seems like a big hint to me!
We bought our own.

We received our toasting glasses as an engagement gift. We will buy everything else, unless it's given to me at my shower.

I got the cake topper (because I had a particular look in mind, and wanted to keep it forever - ended up with a very graceful, beautiful Lenox one) and the unity candle myself. I never bought a cake cutter (didn't need it, really), and my MOH bought the toasting glasses for us as an engagement gift.
