Hi Guys, I'm trying to buy a gift for a friend's wedding from her registry but I'm abit confused about wedding/bridal shower gift giving.
Are bridal shower gifts and wedding gifts two separate things? If I buy a gift from the registry do I also need to give money as a wedding gift?

Re: Wedding Gift and Shower Gift?
I'm not sure about anyone else, but I've always purchased shower gifts (off the registry) and given cash as a wedding present.
ETA:: But I know of those who have given gifts off the registry for the wedding, but I think that a shower gift and a wedding gift are two separate things.

Re: Wedding Gift and Shower Gift?
Yes. The bridal shower gift is usually from the registry and then the wedding gift is usually monetary on Long Island but if it's out of state or upstate, another gift from the registry is acceptable also. That's been my experience anyway.

What if she's not having a bridal shower? Her wedding is end of June and I haven't received an invitation for the shower. I don't think she's having a bridal shower or maybe I'm not invited... Could I use the registry gift as the wedding gift?

Yes, you can definitely purchase something off her registry as the wedding gift.
ETA: If she was not having a shower or if you did not receive an invitation, you would not be purchasing a shower gift.

Re: Wedding Gift and Shower Gift?
Ok, what's an appropriate amount to spend on a wedding gift and a shower gift?
For two separate people: FH's cousin: $$ ? Not too close Friend: $$?

Which gift is going to whom? Are you getting both a wedding gift and just one a shower gift? I spend more on a wedding gift than a shower gift.
FH's cousin - for a shower gift, I would spend $50 to $100, depending on how close I am to this person. For the wedding, depending on certain factors, we usually give between $250 and $350, give or take.
Not too close friend - shower gift I would spend $50. Wedding gift, again, varies greatly but I would still give about the same amount. I usually try to cover our plates at least.
This is just what I would do though, and I'm basing it off my current IL and family situation, which may be completely different than yours.

Thanks that was very helpful! I'm giving the wedding and shower gifts to the cousin and the wedding gift alone to a friend.

This is such a tough question. At the end of the day it really depends on what you can afford. Some people can only give $100, while others are willing to give $400+! I've been going through this with my friends - we have 8 weddings between now and next July. The general response from the girls getting married soon is that they're going to give people what they receive. Friends that are out of town plan on buying stuff off the registry and they're maximum is around $200-$250 INCLUDING the bridal shower gift.
The rest of the girls range between $50-$100 for shower gift (unless in the bridal party, then it's more like $100-$150), and $250-$350 for the wedding gift (cash). Although one friend told me she's giving $300 to not-close friends and $400 to closer friends! At least hers is before mine, so I don't have to feel obligated to match her - she'll just give me what I give her. It's almost as if we shouldn't exchange gifts!
