Wedding Gifts: How much did you make back?

Original post by quirkybride

This is a question for the married ladies. I'm not yet married, I was just wondering how much people end up getting back in gifts. Thanks.

the rule of thumb that i have been told is that usually you make back what you spent on the RH and if your lucky a little bit extra

My dad keeps telling me I need to think of my weddign like a business! How horrible is that? He keeps throwing around fingurs like 20 to 25k! But like you girls I know that this is impossible and not realistic at all!!

Honestly, your dad is a smart man... If you think of it like a biz, you wont go in spending over your head on each and every vendor... I was prob one of the most frugal brides on here, but I had 1 hell of a wedding by doing my research on inexpensive, but amazing vendors... If you want to know more about any of mine in particular, just FM me...

My hall was gorgeous and my guests honestly thought I must have paid a fortune for the kind of bash that swan club threw us... The key to working with vendors is 'ask and you shall (within reason) receive!!'

I am curious about how many brides think that the money they spent was worth it.... hmm I am going to make a poll on BHB!

I totally think it was... That day is unlike any other... You just feel sooo special with it being about the 2 of you and no one else...

that's how I am sure I will feel too, and some people just don't understand it. Yea you can elope, or do something really small and use money on a down payment instead, but a wedding creates a lifetime of memories and it's just such a special day!!!

I just wonder how many people would do things differently if they could, in order to save money.... interesting!

its all relative- but we spent about $35,000 in total (i think). we had 174 guests (204 invited) and we made back a little over $20,000... we paid everything outright so it all just went into a house-fund now

We got back pretty much what we spent on the hall... More generous guests made up for the cheapie ones

Same here!

This is pretty unlikely since most mortgages require 20% down payment.

You can get an FHA loan for as low as 3.5% down... We got one and put 7% down... no questions asked... no hassles... Everything we made back from the wedding was the whole downpayment

I think on average couples give $300...some will give more...some will give less. So count how many couples you have and that can help you get a round about figure.

Most ppl at my wedding gave anywhere from 200-500 a couple. A few ppl who didnt come sent me 100-150 per couple.

All in all we got around 31k in gifts
