I do not want to spend a fortune on my gown. I went to a bridal shop yesterday and picked out two dresses I love but the shop will not give me the name of the designers so I can not price shop. I am going to check out David's Bridal and the Wedding Center but I heard such bad things about both places. Does anyone have any suggestions ?

What is your budget? What do you consider outrageous vs reasonable? I bought a Maggie Sottero wedding dress and I thought it was very reasonable. It was beautiful too. We need more info.

Re: Wedding Gowns
I'm looking for my dress right now too. I went to David's Bridal and got okay service the first time and excellent service the second time. I liked them to get an idea of fit and silloutte. I was at Wedding Center recently and service was okay. The sales lady actually told my friend to go pull more dresses for me! But they do have a good selection and it wasn't busy so I got to try on a lot of dresses. They have a good number of designers too.
I do recommend Lillete's. The service was awesome, and the sales ladies actually think about what you like and make great suggestions for your body type.
ETA: I would start at a 'nicer' place so that you can get the great service and narrow down your search.

The mail order side of RK Bridal does price match, but I'm not sure if the salon side does or not, you'd have to check that. However, their prices are still less than the list prices.

I would love to spend less than $1000 total with alterations, if possible. I don't think 1200 for just the gown is outrageous but if I can get the gown cheaper somewhere else I would like to be given the option.
Has anyone purchased a dress from David's or the Wedding Center?

Definitely try Lidia's in Copiague. I saw many dresses in there for under $1K. The salon is beautiful inside, the help was great, they have very reasonable caps on alterations and I really liked them there. I haven't found my dress yet but when I do, I'm going to try to order it through there.

Re: Wedding Gowns
What I did was pick put a few dresses that I liked (online) and asked for those styles. I ended up not liking them, but at least you know the designer and style#
What I did for my BMs is I went to Bridal Relection which is on the pricey side and they fell in love with a dress. The dress had the designer tag, but not the style number. So I took a pic of the dress and went on the designer's website and found the style number
I then called Burton's and got he dresses for about $70-80 cheaper..
It may take a lot of steps, but it is worth it. I know many places cut the tags out, but if you go to the more expensive places, they will at least leave the tag.
I hated David's Bridal.--JMO I thought it was horrible. The service and some of the dresses cost more than what I paid for mine. The look and feel of some of them was not the same as others I tried on.
I did see some girls try on dresses and they looked beautiful in them . It just wasn't my taste. I didn't find them too cheap either.
My dress with the veil and tax was 1150.00 from Burtons.
I saw dresses alone for more money. Do you have any designers in mind?
HTH!
Good Luck!

I bought my dress through RK's no frills service.... mega discount.
I recall hearing that the wedding center has really bad customer service....
