When does one normally visit vendors for wedding invites and when does one normally send them out?

It took 4 weeks for our invites from start to finish. It took about 1-2 weeks for the proof and then 2 weeks for them to be printed. I think we ordered them in March for our August wedding.
They are usually mailed out 2 months ahead of time (8 weeks -- or 10 weeks if you have a lot of OOT guests, etc.).
The RSVP date is usually 1 month before the wedding.
