fiance and i decided not to have a wedding registry. we don't have a house or apartment yet. we are planning to live in my parents house for a couple of months then look for a place to live in. also, in that way, guests will assume that we prefer monetary gifts. but i feel like it would be weird not to open gifts on our wedding shower. lol. has anyone preferred not to do a wedding registry? whachu guys think ?

you are going to need stuff when you do move on your own, so I would recommend doing a registry - even if it's just a few basic household things. That way, you get some stuff when you have your own place and you can open things other than money at the shower.

Don't assume people will give you money if you don't have a registry for a shower. They will probably get you typical shower gifts but they will pick out what they like instead of what you like.

I think not registering is a mistake...maybe you can have a basic very simple one...I think for a shower people will not give money and you will end up with things people think you need

Re: wedding registry questions
do bed bath and beyond. anything you don't like you can return for cash :) or maybe just put things you don't really want but can return. a lot of people don't feel right just giving cash.
we live with my dad and besides some new plates or towels are are in the same boat as you with really not needing anything. except we're gonna redo this house and live here in the end, not move out.
or what about some things for your wedding toasting glasses? cafe knife?

I agree with this. At least have a basic registry. If I were invited to a shower without a registry i would NOT give cash. In fact I would never give cash at a shower. I'd probably pick out a household item I think she'll like and bring it to the shower.
You could also do a honeymoon registry! Ours was a huge success and people gave me photos/certificates in the cards of the excursions they had booked for me, so I was able to hold that up and ooh and aah over it.

I agree, I would definitely register for some basic household items. I rarely see people give cash at showers.

I've never seen anyone give cash at a shower, they will most likely give you a giftcard which you'll be stuck with or something they pick out that you really don't want/need. If you are planning on getting your own place, even a year from now, you'll need all the household items so you might as well register for them and hold onto them until you move, this way it gives you a leg up when you do move.
ETA: I was registered for our eparty and we still got gifts that we didn't register for and giftcards to other stores and even restaurants, so people will get you what they want in the long run. We loved and appreciated everything we got, luckily we were able to use everything.

this exactly. i don't care how long you've lived together, you can ALWAYS upgrade/add. Do you have a kitchenaid? expensive shiny new appliances?

Re: wedding registry questions
I agree with everyone. This is the one time in your life that people will have a reason to buy you all of these wonderful gifts! My fiance and I are in an apartment, but we've registered for everything that we will want to have for our home, it's just going to sit in storage for a year or so after the wedding. We also did a honeymoon registry through www.libertytravelregistry.com. I think if you don't register, you're risking getting a whole lot of toasters!

Re: wedding registry questions
Even if you register for cooking/baking utensils and some dishes/glasses you can always store those in a closet since they are pretty small. I know @ Crate and Barrel you can register for gift cards too!

I totally agree. Youll need household stuff in the future. Register for what YOU WANT now. Nothing worse than getting pig canisters for your kitchen or something that is not your taste lol! All my stuff is being stored at my parents until we find a house. But its stuff I would have nevvvverrr wanted to purchase myself! Its amazing how much household stuff costs too. We got almost 4000 worth of kitchen crap and household things- i would never spend that much money on that! ..clothes yes...lol but not that stuff! Just my opinion good luck!

Yea I would register too. I've never been to a bridal shower where people received cash instead of actual gifts. We were actually asked to register for our engagement party too because some family members want to get us gifts and not give money. We are hopefully buying a house next year anyway, so we are going to need a lot. But it was nice when we got gifts off of our registry for what we wanted.
Plus like the others said, you are going to be getting a house eventually. It's amazing how much things cost!

Re: wedding registry questions
DEFINITLEY REGISTER !!!!!!
DOESNT MATTER WHEN YOU USE IT, YOU WILL WANT THINGS IN YOUR NEW PLACE. SET ASIDE AN AREA AT YOUR PARENTS TO KEEP THE THINGS. PEOPLE WANT TO GET YOU THINGS YOU ARE GOING TO NEED. I WILL BE LIVING AT HOME FOR A LITTLE AFTER I GET MARRIED AS WELL...IF YOU DONT WANT TO OPEN THE GIFTS, USE THE SAYING BE A DEAR WRAP IN CLEAR......THIS WAY YOU CAN DISPLAY THEM AND THE PEOPLE CAN LOOK....PEOPLE LIKE TO SEE WHAT YOU GOT.
BEST WISHES...
