Wedding tomorrow! Need help

Wedding tomorrow! Need help

One of my best friends has been engaged for over a year and was planning an October 2009 wedding. Well, she just announced to us that she's getting married today at city hall! Her Fh and her had $$ issues with the wedding and he has no health insurance, and they just decided they didn't want the big wedding. So, they'll get married today at city hall and then they're having a small dinner tomorrow night with friends at their favorite Sushi Restaurant.

What do FH & I get them? Money? - how much? A gift?- she's not registered. She may still have a shower...after the wedding.

Weird situation and I just found out last night and it's tomorrow...I'm confused.

If they're having issues with money, then perhaps an envelope would be best. If she's a close friend, then consider how much you'd give her if she'd have a real wedding, and put somthing similar in the envelope. The location of the wedding should not change the kind of gift the couple receives.

Unless you know that there's somthing that they need for the house, but there's probably no time to get anything in one day.

I was thinking money, but I wanted something more personal- we've been friends for over 10 years.

Also, they need EVERYTHING for the house...they'll be moving in together from their parents' houses in about a week.

I would agree money, even if they dont have anything for the house, the money seems to be the issue.

I would give them money and then they can buy what they want for the house ....

unless you know of some things that she would want

If money is the main reason, or a big reason, that they're doing it at city hall, then money is what they need most. If you can afford it, and she's a good friend, then I would give her as much as you would have normally given her had she done it at a place. I'm sure she will greatly appreciate it. If you want to give her an appliance as well when they actually move in together, then do that also, as a housewarming gift though, not the wedding gift.

Without question...Money. I'm sure it would be appreciated the most. especially if her FH doesn't have health insurance. I'm sure they'd feel so relieved to have a nice little nest egg that built up even a bit more God forbid (knocking on all wood as I type ) If she does have a shower than you can get her a gift then if you'd like, but after all is said and done, sounds like money is what they REALLY need!

Have FUN!!!!

I actually think the Money is a good idea. What about giving money and then a nice picture frame, like Vera Wang Love Knots, its personal and a nice way to let her know even though she chose city hall, its still her wedding and still very special.

Thanks girls. This is what FH & I decided to do. Give money and a small personal gift like a frame. The issue is that we weren't expecting the wedding and didn't really budget for what we would have given her. We'll figure it out though.

thanks, I'll let you know how it goes!

I agree, maybe get some pictures together and put them in a nice frame to give to her too.

If they're having $ issues, then give them $. How much depends on how good of a friend she is.

I agree, and definitely the same amount (if not more) than you would give if she had it at a hall. I really don't think the venue should affect how much a person gives as a gift, but that's just me.

I agree with Alexandra - money and then a little house gift - like are they coffee drinks - perhaps a small coffee pot and some mugs - or something along those lines.
