We're going to FL for FH's wedding and paying around $800 to go. How much do you give as a gift then?

Re: Weddings You Travel To
Hmm... I'm making my guests travel 2 hours, but I'm also providing a bus (which coincedently is really inconvenient for people I don't want coming) ...
At the risk of sounding like a snob.... I really don't expect guests to take their travel expense out on me. I invited them, I'm not forcing them to come. They should at least pay for their plate.
But if it was me, I'd honestly give the same gift, even if it was accross the street or in another country.

What do you consider covering your plate? $300 for a couple?

Yeah I feel the same way. Actually we're having a similar problem with FH's relatives from Boston. They pretty much said that they expect us to pay for their hotel. Excuse me? hah you son is a big time lawyer and your granddaughter lives in Manhattan, I'm sure they can put you up in a hotel! So if you're not prepared to pay the big $, then maybe give a reason of why you can't come and then if it's someone close, send them a token gift? We've received a few checks from people unable to make the trip and it was actually very thoughtful.

Well, we are going and willing to pony up the $800. That's not in question. And we're giving a gift. I was just wondering if you gave the same as you normally would if you went to a wedding in NY.

I'd give the same thing that I'd normally give if it was local....I dont really consider the cost of travel as part of the gift.

Re: Weddings You Travel To
I attended my cousins wedding in FL last month. The whole trip cost us over $2k!!!!!!! we gave them $250 as a gift. first off b/c the trip cost so much to begin with. Second, b/c i'm getting married in a few months and I'm currently unemployed. So all that was factored in as well.
If it was local it def would have been more

Re: Weddings You Travel To
I went to Miami for a wedding last month and spent nearly $1000 on airfare/hotel for me and my fiance. I didn't take that into consideration since it was my decision to go. I gave a gift equivalent to $275-300.

I would say about the same as I would if I didn't travel.
