I currently live in KY and have been invited to 4 weddings in the next 2 months. Some of them I am attending, some I am not. Coming from NY I am used to giving cash as a gift usually $150/person (i've only gone to weddings where I am close to the people getting married) That being said, I'm not sure what is appropriate here. They do not give money they give gifts. It is considered 'impersonal' to give money. However, everything is gone off of these registry's (except really cheap stuff) and I don't want to randomly pick out someothing for them b/c what if they don't like it. Also I'm not sure how much to spend I'm not close with any of them and I know that they are paying (hold on to your seats) $11 - $18 per person for the wedding. So they invite everyone under the sun b/c it does not cost as much? Any ideas on what to do? The first wedding is in 2 weeks.

Re: Weddinig Gift Q
I live in CA and its the same deal. They give gifts. They think $150 a person is outrageous. I would purchase a bunch of the cheaper items off the registery and group them together in a basket of some sort. They may be offended if you give them a check. Although I did give a check to my one friend out here for $75 and she gave me the longest thank you note telling me how much she loved me and how generous I was!

What about a gift card to the place they're registered?

Thanks, that is a good idea, they could buy some of the items left on their registery. I don't know if they would consider this the same as 'giving money'. I personally don't understand why it is impersonal to give money considering the gifts aren't all that personal, you registered for them, you know what your getting!! i'm so confused!
What do you think an appropriate amount would be?

Re: Weddinig Gift Q
I have heard that outside of the NY area wedding gifts are usually wrapped ones.
My sister lives and got married in CA and the only cash gifts she got was from her immediate family. She had a table set up in the corner of the room and it was overflowing with wrapped gifts. I have only been to 1 wedding NY where 1 person came with a wrapped gift.
if I were attending the wedding you were going to I would probably give them a gift certificate from the store they registered at. and I bet that if you give them $100-$150 they would think you were Rockefeller

I would probably give them a gift card to wherever they are registered.

As a New Yorker who hasn't been to a NY wedding in a long time....yeah people hardly ever give money in other parts of the country....I was in wedding culture shock at the weddings I have started going to since out of college after NY....great ideas for a gift card or just another gift that is personalized...

Gift card to a store is a great idea. If they own a house can't go wrong with Home Depot. if not, crate and barrel or pottery barn type. Red Envelope always has great gift ideas, they have a website try them.
