Weights Question?

To lose weight and tone up. Is it better to do less reps at a higher weight or more reps at a lower weight?

Re: Weights Question?

it is generally better to do high weights and low reps if you train each body part once per week.

If you train each body part twice per week, which is preferable, then train each body part once with high weight low reps one day , and once with lower weight and more reps another day that week.

by more reps I mean 3 sets of 10-12 reps, low reps is 5 sets of 5-6 reps.

My trainer and what I've read says to tone up you should do less weight and more reps.

Re: Weights Question?

Light weights while dieting will result in muscle loss, because your body, will try to 'slow down' because of lack of fuel. You need fuel to gain muscle.

if you train with heavy wieghts, you will be building muscle which is what you are looking to do. You want to gain muscle, then loose the fat over it.

the only way to gain muscle is to train with heavy weights. this will get you to actually 'see' results and faster as well!

MOST trainers do not keep up to date. there is no such thing as 'toning'. there is only making muscle or losing muscle under a layer of fat. you want to gain muscle , not lose it! training heavy is the only way to achieve this effectively. High reps are more for endurance. they are a waste of time for what you are trying to acheive.

Re: Weights Question?

I was told to start with lower weights and to do four sets of 15.
Once that becomes easy, then you progress to the next weight up and work up to do the same amount.

Then so on and so on.

If by the 2nd set you are still not feeling a burn, the weights are way too light. Up them.

I know that if I can get through the 2nd and 3rd set with a breeze, it's time to increase those weights.
Most of the time it's a struggle to finish the 3rd set.

This is way too much. 4 sets of 15? wow! Thats 60 reps for one exercise!

you can be getting so much more accomplished if you stop this insanity! you can be getting 3x the results, but then you won't need your trainer, anymore and I am sure he won't like that very much.

Ask him how he trains. Therre is NO difference between the way a man should train and a women should train.
