So as im daydreaming at work eating my 11th butterfinger...
i was thinking back to being a kid. Getting dragged to friends of my parents homes for 'coffee'
they always sat around the dinning room table, drank coffee..ate dessert and talked... for HOURS.
when you guys have company over.. just to chill.. do you sit around the friggen dinning room table?
is that just an old european thing to do?

Re: weird question NWR..
LOL omgoshhhh. FH is portuguese and for as long as I've been with him, we NEVER sit in the living room at the FIL's when we visit! We always sit around the dining table!
When we visit his Aunt, we also sit at the table with coffee and some typre of pastry.
I never really thought about it but I guess it is weird! A whole living room, gone to waste!
FIL's even have a tv in the kitchen so they even watch t.v at the dining table instead of the living room

I thought this was just me but maybe not lol...I'm Italian and I guess I always thought it was a cultural thing too. I feel like whenever friends and family get together no matter how big or small the house is you always end up congregating in the kitchen/dining room table to hang out and chat

Re: weird question NWR..
UM.. considering FH and I both still live with our parents, we usually either sit at the table or in my room, I have couches. as for our parents, his parents ALWAYS entertain at their dining room table... and there's always coffee (black and brown)
my family is usually in the dining room as well, though sometimes its outside on the deck and rarely we have people in the living room.

Re: weird question NWR..
we usually do that. Growing up with my family, it was usually the women sitting around the table talking, and the men watching tv in the living room. When I would go to my mom's friends with her they would sit around the table and talk and have coffee and dessert for hours.
When we do a girls night at one of our houses, we usually wind up sitting around the table talking and eating or drinking wine! And every Sunday at FH's house we st at the dinner table even after dinner is done, talking. hahaha

My family and in my house, we still all sit around the dining room table, but when it is nice, than it is the outside table. Never the kitchen table or couch when company is over. I would like to end that tradition, but I notice myself becoming more and like my parents.

Re: weird question NWR..
My family sits in the living room when they entertain. Sometimes the women will go in the kitchen/dining room and the men stay in the living room. But at FH's parents house (they're off the boat Italian), NO ONE is allowed to sit in the dining room, except the tax guy once a year. They have a beautiful set, but you can only look at it. You can't sit in the living room unless there's a sheet or a towel on the couch. Whenever we go there, we head straight to the basement, which has a loveseat, covered by a sheet, a rocking chair with plastic, and an old wooden table covered in a sheet. And we watch tv on an old 20 in tv in the far corner of the room, when there are 3 big screen tv's up stairs no one uses unless an italian soap opera is on. LOL And the basement is HUGE and tiled and pretty empty so it echoes. LOUD. And his whole family screams when they talk. Now I take an Excedrin before I go over.

Hey! I resemble that remark!! I wasn't allowed to sit on my Mother's livingroom couches (not family room couches) until I was 21.

Re: weird question NWR..
When people come over is the only time we actually use our dining room table and everyone hangs around it or the living room- its all a big open space they flow into each other.
On a day to day basis our table doesn't get used, we eat dinner sitting on the couch with the puppy
