In my lifetime, I've actually known only 1 person to have cervical cancer and it was effectively treated...so please, someone show me the epidemic?
these immunizations are getting out of control. I resent that my child will be forced to get a chicken pox vaccine. Since when did anyone die from chicken pox????

is the chicken pox vaccine mandatory now? I was just speaking about that the other day. Those vaccines can be dangerous!

well liza, people have died from chicken pox [and polio as this governor compares cervical cancer to]...but i simply don't think this particular one is something we should REQUIRE. my daughter got the chicken pox shot... . One day she looks at me and says: remember when I got the chicken pox and I was sick? dummy, you can't get it. i don't think it's fair...i have scars all over it, so should she!

Re: Well, I think I am IO to this.
Back when they used a 1-5 scale for Pap results, both my mother and my sister came back as 3's. Since cervical cancer is related to having sex at a young age, using BC when you're infected with HPV, smoking and STD's, and those are all on the rise, it doesn't surprise me if cervical cancer is on the rise too.
I've also come back with 'abnormal' paps so I have special concerns too. I don't know if it's hereditary but for three women in one family to have abnormal paps is a little scary.
As for requiring your children to be vaccinated, if it's not going to pose a serious risk to them, why not? I can't really weigh in too much on this since I'm not a parent and don't plan to ever be one.

I understand the availability of a vaccination, but I certainly don't see the need for it to be MANDATORY.
Explaining sex-ed to 6th graders is one thing, explaining cervical cancer to them is entirely different.

Please allow me to attempt justifying this explanation.
The 6th graders of today are a hell of a lot more sophisticated and sexually savvy than most of us were at that age. Many of them have already started having sex and if they arent going to be smart about it, they could end up with HPV (which I have had) and end up with cervical cancer if they leave it untreated.
It suqs(creative spelling huh) that the children lose some innocence by making things mandatory and educating them on serious topics like cancer. However, I think there is an element of a trickle down theory. The more people who get vaccinations, the less amount of people get sick. The less amount of people who get sick, the cheaper insurance can be. Yeah, sadly, I think it could boil down to dollars and cents. Cervical cancer is horrible for any woman to go through and in the eyes of insurance companies, VERY expensive to treat. Prevention in the form of a vaccine is a lot cheaper for them.
