WENT TO SS TODAY!!

Just wanted to let you ladies know how easy it was to change my name at social security.. i went in (i called beforehand to find out what to bring) i brought my mariage license and my drivers licence.. i had to fill out an application, (by the way you need your moms maiden name her ss# your dads name and his SS#) went to the counter and i am not exagerating when i say it took 5 minutes..I hyphened my name (for some reason i got there and paniced about changing my name.. dont ask me why, so i decided on the hyphen at the last minute) i went to DMV but the line was OUT THE DOOR and in this heat i wasnt standing outside...i am going to go monday so ill let you know how that goes ..

Also SS is free and you get a new card in 2 weeks..

Did you hypenate your name on the marriage license too? I am considering doing this and need some help with what you have to legally change and not change if you do Smith-Doe. Thanks

no when i went to get the licence i just told them DH's last name... and the licence says just his last name for me.. well i decieded at 930am today to hypenate, so i told the lady at the counter thats what i wanted to do and she said no problem, she put it in the system like that (Suzanne Smith-Jones) now when i go to DMV i have to do the same thing.. the only thing she did say was that i am always going to have to sign with both name.. i dont mind that...Saturday i go to the bank to do the same thing...hope this helps you.. and just so you know i went to the feeport SS office and there was NOONE in there but me.. no lines or anything .. it was great.. i was ready to spend hours on line!!! Just to clarify (because I am obsessed with this) if I hypentate on my marriage license, everything must be changed and I always have to sign with both names? But your marriage license is different than all of your other stuff?

Michele, whatever you put down for your name on your SS card IS YOUR NAME FOREVER!!!! No matter if you put it hypenated or not!!! That now becomes your LEGAL name and you have to sign it with that name!!!

What ever you choose to make your name with SS thats your name leagally.. so if you choose smith jones with SS then you go to the DMV and you change it there then to the bank , you have to sign all legal documents, ie.. taxes,, checks, motor vehicle things, with smith-jones. i think this is what you asked... it didnt seem to matter that on the marriage licence i choose just his name then changed my mind when i got to SS..i think that is the place where it counts the most!..

I also spent a total of 5 minutes last month at the SS office when I went to change my name. However, I wanted to clarify one thing - you do not need your mothers or fathers SS#'s if you already have a number issued and you aren't changing the number, just the name. The instructions on the form state that is so.

I dropped my middle name and took my maiden name as my middle name. The only thing I have to remember now is that is how it has to be listed on my income taxes when I file. However you want to do your name socially or prefessionally it doesn't matter.
