were we wrong...

were we wrong...

FH and I picked out our invites and when the time came the only person to see them aside from us, was my mom and that was only to proof read it before they went into production (bc she lives a block from us and also is a teacher so grammar is er thing). she made no changes so we sent out the invites on friday.
Saturday FH got a call from his mom screaming and complaining that we referred to her as 'Mrs. Bill Smith' (the invite wording said...
bla bla bla....wedding of Paula to Dan son of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Smith

His parents are married and have been married for 30+ years how else would we have referred to them? she said she wanted to be listed by herself with her first name
she just went off on FH and made him feel terrible and he said maybe we should start asking for her opinions before we do things. this made me flip out bc we asked for no ones opinion and its not like she paid for the invites!!!
UGH i cant stand this lady but it has me wondering if we were wrong for writing it that way? regardless it is too late, the invites are printed and sent

she probably just wanted to have a say in how they would have been worded but you are not wrong. you paid for them and if your not asking for anyone else's opinions, hers isn't necessary. she is married - you referred to her correctly. she's nitpicking now and its sad.
you mailed them out, you loved the invites and be happy they are out of the way!

I would have done it that way if they are still married. Fh's moms name is separate even though they are married because her last name is different. I still wanted to put mr. And mrs. since she is technically 'mrs. Jones.'

Let her have her tantrum - there is nothing you can do now and there are better things to worry about.

Re: were we wrong...

you're definitely not wrong

most people do it this way and don't spell out the wife's name.

i would just tell your FH to tell his mom that if it was THAT important to her, she should have spoken up - your wedding is less than 3 months away - she should have assumed invites would be going out soon

i wouldnt stress too much you said yourself its too late to have anything reprinetd and that would be crazy expensive anyway. also the way you wrote it 'son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Smith' is the proper way to write their name.

We wrote ours out just like you. That IS the correct wording. Honestly, what is wrong with people? They should be happy that their name is even on the damn thing. People astonish me. I think if people aren't going to open their wallet, they deserve ZERO say.

Stuff like that infuriates me. So sorry you are dealing with that.

Re: were we wrong...

For a married couple, that is the customary and traditional way to refer to them. You absolutely are not wrong at all. When you refer to a set of parents separately, it makes people assume they are divorced. Shes crazy!! This day is about YOU and your FH, not her!!

Re: were we wrong...

i agree with the other girls. What you did was not wrong and if she has a problem with it then too bad! You are the bride and you guys can do whatever you want. She's not paying so it's not up to her.
