What a pain in the @ss!!

OMG, Fh and I spend about 3 hours trying to strip the paint off a door. FH and I are going to buy the house that I currently live in from my family. So we thought that since the inside doors are oak but painted white (3 coats of paint), we'd strip them, sand them down and polish them. Well, we took a door from the upstairs kitchen closet and only did ONE side and it took us 3 hours and it came out like sh!t Boy did we learn a lesson. We will NEVER attempt to strip a door again We will either buy new doors or just paint them over. These doors are really good quality, so I'm not sure if we want to get rid of them. I just hope they look good in the end.

ITs a long process but its worth it. I stripped a ton of wood in my Co-op. I used a heat gun, stripper and sander. There are some good non toxic stripping products out there. Stop by Home Depot and talk to the paint people before you decide.

Thanks Fran. I'll tell Fh and maybe we'll give it another try.

If you have a lot of doors to do it is a HUGE job. I would suggest getting some good equipement, like a power sander. You can even rent them but if you need them for a while buying is probably cheaper. Staining also take a lot of practice. You might want to get a piece of cheap wood from HD to practice on.

Another option...

my aunt had some of her doors 'dipped'. She removed them and took them to someone who I guess dips the whole thing in paint remover. They came out beautiful. No idea of the cost but she said it was soooo worth it after trying to do it herself. If you are interested I can get the contact info.

Its called the Furniture Doctor, right on Sunrise Highway near Merrick. Their phone number is 516-785-0980
They pick up and deliver (for a fee) and they really did great work on the stripping. At the time, (a few years ago) the door stripping was $180 and $75 for delivery.

Hope it works out!

we were planning to do this as well but have now decided to just buy new doors throughout the house...sometime next year.

Thanks so much Kate! I'm going to give them a call.

Irene: I would suggest that you do not do it yourself. Unless you are really really patient.

Oh and I should add that though the price seems high, and that was probably 3 years ago, it was important to them to restore the doors they had in the house because of their character and age.

Buying new would have saved her alot of hassle but these particular doors would have been much more than $180 each easy.
